The Newsom administration is suing five more California cities
— Calexico, Costa Mesa, Half Moon Bay, Ridgecrest and Turlock — for failing to complete state-mandated housing plans, known as the “housing element.”

Huntington Beach was the first city to face such a legal action, and it recently finalized its housing element plans following a court-order and massive fines.
The law, which has been in place since 1969, requires cities and counties every eight years to d…

A few highlights from the Turkish-Persian section of a random carpet symbolism book I skimmed while stopped at a random library in New Jersey a couple days ago

Tree of life: one of the oldest and most universal symbols of mankind.

It supports the sky, and provides a path from earth to heaven. In different cultures it is called by names such as haoma, asherak, yggdrasil, irminsu or asvattha.

Thus, one often sees it in prayer rugs, as a reminder of the passage from this existence into a higher life.
Diamond or Lozenge:

It has been conjectured that this omnipresent motif in Anatolian kilims is a male triangle attached to a female triangle, and thus signifies creation. There are doubtless many interpretations. A diamond surrounded by hooks is called in Turkish kirkbudatz, 'forty branches'.

Among some semi-nomadic pastoral (terekme) tribes of Azerbaijan, a favourite symbol is a large diamond, signifying woman. Smaller diamonds within the large one signify a pregnant woman or her progeny. A …
Celestial creature: Recognizable because flames appear from flanks or shoulders.
Arabesque or Tendril:

The basic unit of the arabesque, a favourite Islamic decorative theme, may be described as a split leaf seen in profile, called islimi in Persian. Derived from a Sassanian motif, it developed under the Abbasids in the ninth and tenth centuries, and matured under the Seljuks in the twelfth and thirteenth. It became central in Turkish and Persian carpet design only after the fifteenth century. In its fascinating fully developed form one sees interlaced lattice systems of sp…

I must assume that the announced consultation is being displayed down in the Whitehall cellars in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”
Because I can't find it. The link in the Guardian article just loops back to itself and a DDG search doesn't find it either.
However presumably the government has send a link to all the relevant car industry lobby groups.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s political action committee dropped a massive
$53.9 million investment into the Texas Senate race, according to a Federal Election Commission filingsubmitted Monday.
The investment from Texas PAC, a committee associated with Thune’s Senate Leadership Fund, divided the media spending push:
Nearly $27 million will be used to support Republican nominee Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general,
while $27 million is set to oppose Democratic …

Interesting to compare the author Neal Stephenson's profiles on X/twitter vs. Bluesky.
He has 89,4 K followers on X, where he still posts, but just under 10 K on Bluesky, where he doesn't post at all.
He has many fans on the fediverse who discuss his books, but he is not here.

Sometimes I run into a bug and it takes me a solid hour or more to convince myself that it’s a bug. I do not want to believe that someone made such a mistake…
github.com/freebsd/pkg/issues/ for example, has been “fixed” at least twice. but it’s still broken.

I’m all alone on the Northwood bus headed to North Campus where I’m meeting (in my new office!) a student who I am trying to recruit to write a Master’s thesis on digital privacy.

Riding the Northwood bus toward North Campus, snapping a selfie mid-ride. The photo's taken from a low angle looking toward the back of the bus, with the interior's yellow stanchions and blue seats filling most of the frame, and the ceiling grab handles dangling above. Someone in a cap and sunglasses is visible close to the camera on the right, and there's a bit of motion blur from the bus moving - the whole thing has that classic "quick pic on public transit" feel, empty seats and all.

Bedtime. Not falling asleep as quickly as I had hoped. We went for a roughly 2h meander today in Wynnum, some of it through a beautiful mangrove forest.

A woman standing on a wall looking at two pelicans. Pelicans looking back sceptically down in the mudflats. Ocean in the distance.
Boardwalk entry into the mangrove forest
Mangrove teens and youngens.
A clearing then a body of water encircled by a huge mangrove forest.
