Folk who've been following me for a long time will remember that last autumn I was posting pictures of doing the joinery for a new workshop. And then I went mad, and got ill, and for most of this year there's been no progress.
But my friend Lucy has been here for a week, and between the two of us the frame is now erected. Now I need to sort the timber stack (which hasn't been improving while I've been ill), erect a roof, and build some walls. But the bit I couldn't …

Beyond, the trees on the edges of the wood are still standing, but most of the centre was blown flat in the storm, and new young trees are only slowly beginning to grow through the remaining wreckage.
Looking down on the new frame from my bedroom window. One of the new top rails still needs to be cut to length, and there's at least one brace still missing (I'll add more if I think they're needed. This is enormous progress, and a weatherproof workshop will be a great improvement to my quality of life.

My wife just told me that she had the “privilege” to see pictures of machines she designed that were destroyed in Saudi Arabia. A refinery was hit and the flames were 30 feet above the highest stack in the plant. It burned for 3 weeks.
She designed them at least 20 years ago as a young engineer.

I wanted to post mountain photos more regularly again! So here's one trail from last year where I started really early to avoid the heat.
It was a hike that I did alone and met just like ... 2 or 3 people. Oh and I was glad to have a water filter with me!
I spotted a spring on my way up and - knowing that I'd come pack to it later - I didn't have to use my water sparingly.

Lee-Yang paradigm of phase transition in eigenstate thermalized systems

Abstract: As phase transitions in isolated quantum systems remain elusive, here we show how a thermodynamic-like phase transition, falling into the Lee-Yang paradigm, can arise in systems displaying eigenstate thermalization. Specifically, we show that in holographic conformal field theories, the eigenstate expectation of the auto-correlation function can be mapped to the partition function ${\cal Z}_{{gauge}}(z)$ of a virtual interacting instanton gas, with the conformal mapping of the imaginary time: $z=1-e^{-\tau}$ and the central charge $c$ mimicking the instanton fugacity and volume, respectively. We find that akin to the Lee-Yang paradigm, for $c\to\infty$ a pair of complex conjugate zeros of ${\cal Z}_{{gauge}}(z)$ move to the real axis located at the famous forbidden singularity. Passing through the singularity the system transits from the low- to high-fugacity phase, accompanied by dramatic changes in scaling behaviors of the free energy and dominant microscopic configurations. Our findings indicate that physics of phase transitions from eigenstate thermalization is very rich.
