The little owl, Athena noctua, is well-known as the companion of the goddess Athena, though it is uncertain how she became associated with the nocturnal birds. In Europe, the owl therefore represents wisdom and is the symbol of many a university.
The ancient Greeks showed #Athena with her favourite bird in their art, like for instance this bronze statuette of Athena flying her owl, dated ca.…

PSA if you live in Europe & have any tendency to feel like shit in winter AND known counter strategies for feeling less like shit ... start employing them NOW.
(I tend to do ok in winter but I am still ramping up my anti-depression tool use, and I am seeing a bunch of friends look like they are entering their winter holes of misery, and am generally a fan of less misery in the world.)

“This is not 'spicy'. This is illegal. This is appalling. This is disgusting.“
"The European Commission has announced it is looking into cases of sexually suggestive and explicit images of young girls generated by Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into social media platform X, following the introduction of a paid feature known as “Spicy Mode” last summer."

This summer, Mikhail Loshchinin set out for Russia on a motorcycle with German plates, reaching the border in Latvia on July 1.
At the Ubylinka checkpoint on the Russian side, he presented his Russian passport.
According to his mother, Olga, he didn’t use his Belgian passport because of the urgency of the trip and to avoid needing a visa.
Russian border guards examined Loshchinin’s phone and likely discovered his many contacts in Ukraine.
After holding him for several…

I watched the latest video from @… where he spoke with a German analyst and author ostensibly about the author’s new book… but it really was about how NATO may be on the verge of collapse right now and what the new reality might look like. Highly recommend Canadians watch this.
My only complaint and comment completely selfishly, is the absence of Canada 🇨🇦 in the discussion. I have to say I am feeling more than a little apprehensive, even isolated. I know Canada is not exactly pulling its weight and won’t be a major player in whatever Europe needs to do to secure itself in a post-NATO reality.
But I am definitely left wondering and more than a little worried…. What the heck is Canada going to do?
We border Greenland. We are deeply connected to Ukraine socially. We have a force in Latvia.
Anders, if you have thoughts on this, I would be interested, as would others.

An evening discussing falling enrollment in #STEM courses at universities across Europe, especially traditional studies like chemistry, geology and meteorology. I wonder if young people are unaware of just how interesting #STEM careers to be? Or do they have the perception it's "too hard" compared to other subjects where easier grades may be had? Or is it simply they think they can have "better"* jobs in other fields?

To be sure, American capital isn’t abandoning the world outside entirely and Chinese investment continues to be greeted with suspicion in many countries.
There is still a very real gap in the current value, or stock, of all the investments that the US and China have out in the world. At the end of 2024, the total value of US companies’ long-term physical investments overseas was some $6.8 trillion, almost $4 trillion of which was in Europe according to official US data. China’s FDI stock in the…
annual investment in electricity generation rising from just over USD 500 billion over the last five years to more than USD 1 600 billion in 2030, before falling back as the cost of renewable energy technologies continues to decline. Annual investment in fuel supply however drops from about USD 575 billion on average over the last half‐decade to USD 315 billion in 2030 and USD 110 billion in 2050. Th…

Anger at the regime continues to spread,
even beyond the borders of the United States.
Millions of workers worldwide are following the fortunes of their brothers and sisters in the US
with intense sympathy for their struggle.
In Germany in particular, Trump’s actions vividly bring to mind Hitler, the Second World War and the Holocaust.
More and more people are becoming aware that a third world war can only be stopped if we succeed not only in overthrowing the…
