Wise words from @….
Reflecting now on how often I find myself saying “Just show up, over and over, and do some work. Don’t worry about whether it’s enough, about whether you’re going to get an A. Just show up. Do some work.”
Wanting to get really good at [software dev skill]?
Worried about passing the class?
Not sure if you’re a Real Programmer yet?
Impostor feelings?
Horrified at politics?
Wanting to saving democracy?
Feeling powerless?
Anxious? Depressed? Panicking?
Show up. Work. mastodon.social/@grimalkina/11

The race is on to succeed Gavin Newsom,
the California governor with presidential ambitions
whose terms runs out next year
– and it’s already a crowded field.
More than 95 candidates have so far submitted paperwork
indicating their intention to run,
though the official filing period doesn’t start until 9 February.
The field looks wide open,
with polling yet to indicate a clear frontrunner
and nearly half of voters describing their prefere…

Content warning: re: intense Gnome frustrations no one should be forced to read

Found an obscure hint that perhaps instead of authenticating through #Evolution I should instead authenticate through the #Gnome settings for attached accounts, so I tried that approach, this time it asks for far more permissions (8 in all) but, you guessed it, a classic Sam Beckett "No Answer" and the terse response, "timed out".
So the app doesn't matter. The browser doesn't matter. The account or any legacy cruft doesn't matter.
Does this leave as the only explanation that perhaps Google no longer provides OAuth2 tokens? Surely that would be all over the news if true, but I'm running out of local culprits. Also Emacs inability to authenticate Mastodon suggests its neither google nor Debian per se? Maybe I should spend my time more productively slamming a car door on my fingers?
I have a dread feeling wiping the laptop and carefully reinstalling from scratch will not work.

Series C, Episode 10 - Ultraworld
ULTRA 1: We have collected a great deal of information about earth and its dominant species, with one important omission. We intend to rectify that deficiency.

Claude Sonnet 4 describes the image as: "I can see this is a dramatic scene with moody lighting, featuring someone wearing what appears to be a pink or coral-colored garment and a decorative necklace. The lighting creates strong contrasts with shadows, and there are vertical elements (possibly bars or architectural features) visible in the background, giving the scene a somewhat confined or institutional feeling. The cinematography and styling suggest this is from a film or television productio…

People were jumping into action here in Minneapolis — droves of people, comfortable people, white people — not in mid-January, but in •early December•. (And the groundwork started much earlier!)
Community meetings overflowing. Signal groups exploding. Observer trainings filling day after day after day. Mutual aid networks popping up like mushrooms. On and on.
Why? Because we saw brown and Black neighbors being dragged from their cars, dragged from their homes, stalked, terrorized, •kidnapped• with barely the slimmest shadow of due process or legal oversight.

…everyone there was white. •Everyone•. This particular park would usually be more white than not, but…this was weird.
There’s officially a city prohibition on ICE setting foot in city parks, but who knows what that’s worth? Those bastards will do anything if they think they can get away with it. And they’ll grab people right off the streets if they’re falling behind quota for the day. Who’d risk that?
ICE had apparently succeeded turning the park into all-white world they dreamed of. It was…creepy.

I am once again begging, begging everyone to hold these 3 thoughts in their head at once:
1. Plastics recycling is not very effective. It’s far, far better to not use plastic at all in the first place, and that failing, far better to reuse.
2. Plastics recycling is not worthless or pointless. Don’t just throw it all away because “iT dOEsn’T matTeR.” A miserable 5% reclaimed is still better than 0% reclaimed.
3. Plastics recycling is nonetheless part of a petrochemical greenwashing campaign, per @…’s post below. mastodon.social/@CelloMomOnCar

Many of us are in @… and @… ’s situation here: plastics are collected for recycling, but few/none enter the recycling stream. In that situation:
- Robin’s response is the first and best one: use less.
- In addition, I’d advocate for (1) continuing to recycle what you can’t avoid using and (2) give that city gov endless headaches about their failure to recycle. Show there’s demand for recyclability, get whatever tiny fraction does get recycled out of the waste stream, •and• make headaches for people in positions of power for plastic failing to live up to that demand.
I would •not• just stop recycling. Don’t just give up. My 2¢.
