The Trump administration is not attacking the "excesses" of "woke" scholarship. They're at war with the very idea of power analysis, with the feeling of deep empathy with the oppressed, with ethical commitment to make a just world.

It wasn’t so much what Zohran Mamdani said. It was how he said it.

“We’re going to stand up for Haiti, because you taught the world about freedom!” the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York exclaimed to an elated crowd at a Haitian music festival in June, fresh off his upset victory in the primary.

Mr. Mamdani pronounced the island nation’s name “AH-ee-tee” — near-perfect Creole elocution.

“When I heard him say that, I smiled,” recalled Brian Purnell, one of Mr. Mamdani’s former professor…
He would also become one of the most visible representations of a new generation of progressives — whose formative years as young adults were shaped by elite colleges where, over the last decade, theories of social and racial justice became even more deeply ingrained in liberal arts education.

Mr. Mamdani graduated in 2014 from Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine, with a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies. And his experience there — readings of critical race theorists in the classroom and …

"When I hear international leaders speak of “Israel’s right to defend itself,” I wonder: against whom? Against mothers with their babies? Against teachers with their board markers? Against students with their books? The global silence — or worse, complicity — amplifies our grief" -- Dr Hassan El-Nabih

OTD 5 years ago, I posted this:
So, in the last 24 hours we had
- Zombie minks in Denmark
- almost 400 km/h wind,
- thunderstorms and lightning in Iceland
Either someone is playing an updated version of Jumanji, or some Nordic director is shooting a video clip for a "Thriller"/"Bohemian Rhapsody" remix.

Three part meme, showing the headline "Dead minks infected with a mutated form of Covid-19 rise from graves after mass culling", a graph showing wind speeds of up to 120 m/s in Iceland and a lightning strike.

saw jimmy cliff once, like 20 years ago, when i was on vacation with my family & he happened to be playing on the island where we were. he came on wayyyy late, maybe even after midnight, following like a half-dozen local reggae acts, & holy shit that voice was right there. so captivating & joyous.

It was a beautiful day for #flying in southern California. Visibility was at least 90 miles, and I managed to squeeze nearly 2 hours out of a few thermals near Warner Springs before making a stop at Santa Catalina Island on the way home.

View over the Pacific Ocean towards the sun. The sea is calm, there are a few clouds. Santa Catalina Island is visible to the right, an in the far distance, San Clemente Island rises above the horizon

It seems that @… was following me with his drone.

A drone follows a man on a unicycle, cycling along a dirt path up to a white bus in Icelandic nature on a sunny day.

Content warning: bitcoin conference report

Despite much opinion to the contrary, the government money we use is crappy.
I'm at bitfest in Manchester to find out if Bitcoin could be a better money.
It could hardly be worse.
The mood is still good, people are joking about recent devaluation rather than crying. Those who aren't all in are trying to buy more at the discount.
After an introduction by Mad Bitcoins, Joe Bryan explains the problem with government money.
He imagines an island on which two types of money are tried, with a dividing wall between them.
When economic problems hit, government can just print more money on the fiat side. Everyone now using money which is worth less. Distorting prices, inflating asset prices, making the rich (who hold assets) richer and the poor (who have to pay inflated prices) poorer. Driving wealth inequality.
On the hard money side, government must tax properly. Take in more from the rich rather than inflating to take it from the poor. Reducing wealth inequality.
On the government money side, the wealthy monitize houses, stocks, resources. Saving in money is impossible, its inflated away. So they save in assets and hording resources. Capital is misallocated. The youth can't afford houses. Poverty traps are caused. The only way out is printing more for benefits. Making it all worse. More economic crises, more printing. More government debt.
Eventually, the wall is broken. Government money people can save in the hard money instead. It reduces the value of government money further. More printing. More inflation.
Eventually, war. Funded by printed money.
The dollar is the best of a bad bunch all other government money is falling in value even faster.
I wonder, is bitcoin really this better money though? It's limited, hard, and can't be printed without energy investment.
I'm still unsure that fixing money fixes the world.
--
Note: "crypto" is mostly more like government money than bitcoin. It can be printed indefinitely by it's makers, does not cost it's makers to print. Crypto is usually just a scam people to get more bitcoin. Bitcoin is not crypto.

#EroticMusings 25: Does your erotica ever explore chronic or terminal health?
I plan to write a short series focused on that topic - Namalenia is suffering from a progressing illness that picks up speed as she ages and Rhaise is suffering from a chronical condition after literally falling off an airship, almost drowning and barely surviving the ordeal. They meet on the island where …
