Looks like the Danakil Depression is trying to become a bay…
I’ve always wanted to live through a major geologic event. I missed the Zanclean Flood, the filling of the Black Sea, and the glacial outbreak of Lake Bonneville, but hopefully NatGeo or someone will get some cameras out to that Hell-on-Earth location. It could be really big…
(keep it to yourself if you just want to tell me it’s not happening. Do you think I don’t know?)

Abstract: The ability to address sub-picosecond events of weak optical signals is essential for progress in quantum science, nonlinear optics, and ultrafast spectroscopy. While up-conversion and optical Kerr gating (OKG) offer femtosecond resolution, they are generally limited to ensemble measurements, making ultrafast detection in nano-optics challenging. OKG, with its broadband response and high throughput without phase-matching, is especially promising when used at high repetition rates under focused illumination.
Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast detection scheme using the third-order nonlinearity of graphene and thin graphite films, operating at 1 GHz with sub-nanojoule pulses and achieving 141 fs temporal resolution. Their exceptionally large nonlinear refractive index, orders of magnitude higher than conventional Kerr media, enhances detection efficiency at smaller thicknesses, enables sub-picosecond response, and supports broadband operation. Their atomic-scale thickness minimizes dispersion and simplifies integration with microscopy platforms, optical fibers, and nanophotonic circuits, making them a compact, practical material platform for nano-optical and on-chip ultrafast Kerr gating.

Kristi Noem, the US homeland security secretary,
has advocated for a new travel ban on visitors from an unspecified number of countries
following the shooting death in Washington DC of a national guard member by an Afghan national.
Noem posted to X her proposal on Monday night after she said she had spoken with Donald Trump,
whose first term travel ban on seven Muslim countries faced widespread criticism and followed a rocky legal path before it was eventually upheld …

On 31 March 2026, University College London will be hosting a Festschrift Symposium for Professor M. Angela Sasse, to recognise and celebrate her contributions to the field of Computer Science and human-centred security specifically. We are seeking scientific contributions to a volume that will be presented at the event. Submissions will be selected by a committee of her students and colleagues, with accepted papers being made available online following the event.
Submissions are limit…

Äntligen händer något kul #Mamdani

Löpsedel från New York Post med Mamdani som håller uppe hammaren och skäran. Text "On your Marx, get set, Zo! Socialist Mamdani wins race for mayor - THE RED APPLE"
Karta över New York med Staten Island särskilt stort och texten "BREAKING: Cuomo has fled the NYC mainland following its fall to socialist Zohran Mamdani. Sources say he will establish a new govt on Staten Island with the goal of eventually reclaiming the entire city. Mamdani has promised to purge all remaining Cuomintang on the mainland."
