#TIL: a single 2-part regex in Perl can sometimes be reduced from quadratic to linear time by decomposing it into a series of 2 simpler regexes.

I'm not going to actually use this, which makes me sad, but I do get to share it here: If you start counting by 1s from 0, and then every 6 numbers start to represent the next-highest odd number as a group (3s, then 5s, then 7s) and take the middle number of each group, you hit a bunch of really cool numbers along the way:

I have been working with regex since 1983 and with Perl regex since 1993 and it took a stream of pre-release fixes for potential runaways in SpamAssassin for me to look at the new code and go “HUH?” and go delving in the docs.
(and yes, SA code additions ALWAYS get a REAL code review. I don’t give a 1 on code I don’t understand. NO ‘LGTM’ reviews!)

This is a part of why I wandered away from webdev.
Not that I ever really did any significant work with “frameworks” beyond filing off rough points in existing sites but that experience and having clients really wanting all the possible info they can get about users soured me on it. LONG ago.
I still write my own site’s HTML by hand, when I touch it. No JS. Very early-90s.

I had to persuade the ASF Infra Team that we don’t use PHP on the SpamAssassin RuleQA host which runs httpd. They had shut it down to avoid the bug.
They were right to do that. It’s reasonable to assume in 2026 that a webserver runs PHP.

I’ve had a similar albeit much less severe problem with my drug dealer ^w^w pharmacy benefits manager. They have dropped coverage for multiple drugs that I have reached as “what works” via trial and error, only for them to decide that I need to revert to one of the errors.
