As higher prices are burning a larger hole in consumers’ wallets,
it may seem counterintuitive that the Federal Reserve made borrowing costs even higher by raising rates on Wednesday.
But the reason stems from the fact that even though rates are higher than they were for much of the first two decades of the 2000s,
consumer spending, business investment and other measures of the health of the economy are all running hot.
And inflation, the rise in prices that can resu…

@… "Can emojis be removed from Unicode? Or are they there forever once they are in?" - As of now, once they're in, they're in. The code point in Unicode is then reserved for this symbol. This can be a problem because emojis are kind of open-ended (other than alphabets and many other symbol lists). And it's possible that some emojis turn out to be rarely used. I could imagine that eventually some platforms just stop supporting a certain emoji - but it's really useful to have an international encoding standard which is fully supported by most technology (as anyone who has programmed or written online text in the early 2000s can attest). That's why getting a new emoji approved has become so hard - we're basically creating a kind of tech debt for a potentially long time.
Funny story - you could try creating a post now with a Unicode character from an "empty" code point in the emoji range, in the hope that it will get assigned in a later round. I've seen such a post on the old Twitter, which later was filled with all kinds of random emojis, when you look at it in a few years. #linguistics #emojis #WorldEmojiDay

Markets can stay wrong longer than you can stay liquid, so don't bet against them. But if you know the market is wrong, you don't have to bet with it either.

A chart showing booms and crashes: precious metals booming in the 1970s, crashing early 80s; Japan booming in the 80s to crash in the 90s; NASDAQ booming in the 90s before the dot.com crash in the early 2000s; and the NASDAQ/semiconductor indices booming now to even higher normalised levels - the coming crash not yet shown.

Q: What has been your favorite exhibition from your time at the Georgia Museum of Art?
A: Oh, boy. Yeah, that is a hard question. I don’t remember names, but one artist [DeWain Valentine] did these giant resin discs of different colors. There was a kind of a surrealist show that Giancarlo Fiorenza did in the early 2000s.

Okay, I'll just say it. The problem with the "new" Butthole Surfers album is of course it isn't new, it's just an official release of the album that would become The Weird Revolution. Almost all of the songs are the same or similar. Fans have had After the Astronaut for years, since the early 2000s. 🙄 Just wish it was REALLY new material. What, Weird Revolution didn't have Junkie Jenny in Gaytown? I know. But it's all everywhere already.

Digital drawing of my fursona Demi, a babyblue folf with aqua and blue markings, wearing a 2000s gaming-inspired suit. The top part is a half-unzipped blue crop hoodie with short sleeves, decorated with darker dots on the lower half and some white decals. The bottom are white shorts with blue parts, which are decorated with white dots. Under the clothing, he also wears a dark full-body suit. This suit also covers his right sleeve. Why do I want this stupid fucking "Commodore" phone? I never had or wanted a flip phone, and I don't long for the 1990s or 2000s (I remember them: they sucked).
I think I know why:
I wanted to be rid of my fartphone in 2018, and bought a Nokia KaiOS device. It wasn't all that useful because it lacked WhatsApp and Signal, making it unappealing to write a podcast client for it if I still had to carry around a second device to, you know, communicate with people.

2000s: big game companies publish their old games for free download, because they aren't selling them anymore, and who would buy them anyway? Also, that's good marketing to sell new games.
2020s: big game companies are impotent to make new games that aren't crap. Instead, they keep selling old games, remasters of old games (both "enhancing" and "retro" remasters) and reboots of old games.

Just finished re-reading volume 1 of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou by Hitoshi Ashinano in English official translation, checked out from one of my local libraries. It's really cool to see lots of the excellent Japanese stuff that I read through fan translations mostly online in the 2000s and 2010s not only come out as an official translation, but make their way onto library shelves for random people to discover without having to be deep into Japanese culture fandom.
YKK is of course a pretty legendary manga, and even though I'd read it before, it had been a while and the manga is so much more feelings-based than plot-based that it was at least as enjoyable the second time through. Ashinano's sweeping curves that capture the wide open landscapes of Minato are beautiful, and her characters also capture a particular feeling of freedom and kindness that's lovely to immerse oneself in. It's the kind of world where you understand immediately that the gun is just a memento and doesn't represent any kind of violence, foreshadowed or otherwise. Calm down, Chekhov, have a coffee, and get with the extremely relaxing times.
