Weekend #Plankton Factoid 🦠🦐
Since 2011, millions of tons of a brown algae called Sargassum has washed onto beaches in the Caribbean. The rotting seaweed releases toxic hydrogen sulfide, smelling of rotten eggs, impacting tourism and shore access. It was initially thought Saharan iron dust was the cause, but new #science

I was looking for my dishwasher manual. I noticed next to the manual, a link that said "Free Open Source Software". Curious, I clicked on it, and it's a long list of licenses and copyright information that is used in the dishwasher. Ctrl-F, and sure enough - my name's on the list.
I feel like I should have gotten a discount on the dishwasher, or at the very least access to its firmware source code! 🤠

I know some complain about George R.R. Martin and his speed of writing his book series: he started writing "Song of Ice and Fire" in 1991 and so far published five big books (1996, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011) with two more planned.
Beginners.
Ever heard of Donald Knuth? He started writing "The Art of Computer Programming" in 1962, planned in 12 chapters. So far, six and a half chapters have been published, in five big books (1968, 1969, 1973, 2011, 2023) with thre…

Uspol, genocide
In case you're wondering whether "political violence" is escalating in the U.S.A. right now, of *course* it is as we move into an era of concentration campus and domestic military deployments. But both domestic genocides and purges as well as political violence targeted at individual prominent figures has been a *constant* throughout American history, from gun duels fought between political rivals to massacres of Native Americans in order to steal their land, to pogroms against Catholics, to literal wars on local Black success and political participation, all dating back before the American Revolution to the beginning of colonization. Thanks to Wikipedia, here's a *small sampling* where I attempted to whittle things down to about one event per decade before recent times.

Peggle: chasing aces
When PopCap updated Peggle a while ago, to enable the in-app purchase of Peggle Nights, they also set an "ace" score for each level in the original Peggle. This means that for every level, there are two rosettes available - one for clearing all pegs (the "100%" rosette) and one for scoring more than the defined score (the "ACE" rosette).
