I wish #mypy would slow down with adding new features to mypyc, and instead focused on fixing the train wreck that mypyc is right now (since 2023 at least). Like, if your code crashes hard with assertions enabled, then it's broken, period. Ignoring proper testing and shoving the issue under the carpet doesn't make it right.

Abstract: We consider a mixture of at most $k$ unit-covariance Gaussians in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose means belong to a fixed-radius ball, with no separation or minimum-weight condition. Doss, Wu, Yang and Zhou (2023) proved that the minimax Hellinger risk is of order $\sqrt{d/n}\wedge 1$ and constructed a proper polynomial-time estimator with the slower general bound $(d/n)^{1/4}$; obtaining the sharp rate in polynomial time for fixed $k\geq 3$ was left open. We resolve this question. The key device is a moment-fiber range finder. A second-moment subspace controls the energy missed by projection. We then estimate finitely many one-free-index Hermite contractions. These vector-valued contractions recover every tensor component containing exactly one missed direction at the sharp $\sqrt{d/n}$ scale. Every remaining term contains at least two missed factors and is therefore controlled by the residual second-moment energy. The resulting subspace has dimension depending only on $k$. Exhaustive moment fitting in this constant-dimensional space produces a proper mixture and, together with the dimension-free moment characterization of Gaussian mixtures, achieves the optimal Hellinger rate in polynomial arithmetic time for every fixed $k$.

Didn't get to see a total eclipse yet since I picked up astrophotography, but here's the annular one in 2023, as seen from Roswell, New Mexico.
Very simple setup with a professional-grade telescope solar filter film (from Baader) and a small handheld Nikon J5 mirrorless camera.
I would recommend NOT to use those cardboard eclipse glasses for photography, it's way too easy to get it wrong and ruin your camera sensor (or worse, your eyesight if you look through e.g. a DSLR and it accidentally slips).
If you don't really know what you're doing it's much better to just enjoy an event like this directly with the eclipse glasses on your face. (It's safe to look directly during totality, and totality only.)
There will be plenty of pictures!

Just did very approximate calculations; with 10g of lithium per drone*, and assuming the Russian and Ukrainian drone efforts consume 5m units a year**, that'd be ~50 tons of lithium deposited into the environment per year, mostly within, let's say, 50km of the grey zone***. It's only about $20,000 / ton****, which means $1m of metal*****.
So to answer my own silly question: no, it won't be economically viable to scalp the top few inches of topsoil and extract the lithium from it.
* Roughly right for quadcopters / small FPV; larger and longer range ones will have more, so this is a bottom bound. (OTOH longer range UAVs will tend to use ICE kerosene rather than batteries
** Changing all the time as both sides try expanding production as fast as they can manage. Ua are scaling much faster at time of writing
*** Handwaving. Contact zone's hardly moved since early 2023; OTOH Ua are pushing range limits on small battery-powered form factor, saw a 60km claim for the Logistics Lockdown operation the other day
**** There was a big spike to the $70-8000 range in 2022; median price is closer to $10k than $20k
***** (IDK the chemistry but presumably it's in an exciting range of different compounds, depending on how many bits the battery was blown into, how hot / pressured the blast wave was a few tens of mm from the boom, what other stuff was in the vicinity that the lithium would combine with, etc etc.
