Great comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS): dust loss before perihelion
In this study, the dust loss of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is investigated through the analysis of archival images. By measuring the surface brightness profile of the coma, we determined that the comet maintained nearly in a steady state during the observations. Analysis of the dust distribution perpendicular to the orbital plane reveals that the ejection velocity is $v_{\perp}\sim(65\pm5)\,β^{1/2}$ m s$^{-1}$, where $β$ is inversely proportional to the size of the dust grains. We study three extraordinarily bright X-ray flares originating from Cyg X-1 seen on 2023 July 10 detected with INTEGRAL. The flares had a duration on the order of only ten minutes each, and within seconds reached a 1-100 keV peak luminosity of $1.1-2.6\times10^{38}$ erg/s. For example,
"... the distinguished Israeli historian Avi Shlaim lives in the UK and teaches at Oxford University. ... Shlaim is both knowledgeable about the history of Israeli colonisation of Palestine and truly independent. He is in a position to dispassionately provide the context BBC audiences need to make judgments about what is going on and who is responsible for it.
"And yet extraordinarily, Shlaim has never been invited on by the BBC. ... He is one of the prominent Israelis we are never allowed to hear from, because they are likely to make more credible and mainstream a narrative the BBC wishes to present as fringe, loopy and antisemitic."
