NASA’s #Carruthers Geocorona Observatory has also achieved its target orbit, positioning the spacecraft to capture the first repeated observations of the ultraviolet glow from Earth’s outer atmosphere, the geocorona: https://science.nasa.gov/blogs/carruthers-geocorona-observatory/2026/01/12/nasas-carruthers-geocorona-observatory-reaches-target-orbit/ - the achievement was confirmed following its third and final orbital maneuver, a 2-minute thruster fire, on Jan. 8; the spacecraft has now entered its intended halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point, a position of gravitational balance approximately 1 million miles from Earth.

Yesterday on our bike ride we almost got a sun burn and two weeks ago I was snowshoeing in the mountains! It's wild 😉
Today we have light rain, so I'm not sure if I want to get out for some activity or let it be a true #silentSunday .

“During Friday’s Artemis II re-entry,
we will be deploying seismic and acoustic instrumentation at sea across the Southern California Bight
to record the sonic boom produced by the capsule’s re-entry,”
the USGS wrote in an email shared by a user on Reddit.
“Modelling indicates that the acoustic signal may be audible on land in some areas of Santa Barbara County and Baja California, including the Channel Islands.”

As bombs have been falling across the Middle East, I’ve been re-reading Etel Adnan, Lebanese-American poet and painter, especially her book The Arab Apocalypse.
At the same time I have returned to her paintings, which I first encountered at Documenta 13 in 2012. These paintings are small, yet they offer expanses of color and light that fill the eye and lift the spirit.
I thought you might like to see them too.
