The closure of CPB represents the loss of a major institution and decades of knowledge and expertise -- an immediate consequence of the passage of H.R. 4, the Rescissions Act of 2025.
We're grateful to CPB staff for their many years of service to public media.
As an independent, nonprofit news organization, ⭐️NPR remains resolute in our pursuit of our mission:
to create an informed and inspired public in partnership with our Member stations.

The demise of the corporation for public broadcasting,
known as CPB,
is a direct result of Donald Trump’s targeting of public media,
which he has repeatedly said is spreading political and cultural views antithetical to those the United States should be espousing.
The closure is expected to have a profound impact on the journalistic and cultural landscape
— in particular, public radio and TV stations in small communities across the United States.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting Shutdown: A Grim Ending for Publicly Funded Media https://thedissenter.org/the-corporation-for-public-broadcasting-shutdown-a-grim-ending-for-publicly-funded-media/
"The Corporation for Public Broadcasting said Friday it would begin winding down its operations after its funding was eliminated by the Trump administration and Congress."
"The CPB is a private nonprofit founded in 1967 that serves as a steward of funding for public media. It provides funds to 1,500 local public radio and television stations as well as PBS and NPR. It employs about 100 people."
Goddammit
with the wind-down of the CPB and the ongoing proliferation of slop
I feel like I'm watching the information ecosystem's equivalent of the Antarctic glaciers bellyflopping into the sea
A sad goodbye to another institution, that, in fact, helped make America great since 1967.

The #CPB cuts are likely to be the first obvious impacts to rural communities - the Medicaid, etc cuts will probably take longer to impact the rural areas. It's a painful way for voters to discover how much the Federal budget provided critical services to them, and that perhaps they are not as self-sufficient as they thought.
This is just the first in a chain of unpleasant hits to rural life,…

If we had any multibillionaires who wanted to make a big splash in effectively fighting the Fash, fully funding CPB (and hence, indirectly, PBS and NPR) would be a useful thing. A billion dollars is a lot of money, no one needs even one, much less more than one.
Sadly, we don’t.
