Berlin, 1933.

"The reasons were stated like criminal charges. The books of Sigmund Freud, for instance, were charged with spiritual corruption and “the exaggeration and unhealthy complication of sexuality.” After reading the charge, the student threw the book into the pile while declaring, “I commit to the flames the works of Sigmund Freud!”" (Susan Orlean, The Library Book)

It should run again normally tomorrow, it happened as there's a temporary mismatch between statistics that the meta-federation delivers and the actual number of instances 😂

One other thing, while we don't claim that our mixed-effects logit model is the perfect way to account for non-independence between languages, we don't think it's correct, as Xia & Lindell assert, to just claim that our results are "counterintuitive", the fix-eff estimates are "unreliable" and that the high model fits are "unrealistic." Whether a mix model better captures the data-generat. process is ultimately an empirical question, not one to be decided by assertion. Take, for instance, our finding that once random effects for either subregion or language family are included, the estimated effect of L1_population reverses direction—from the negative value reported by Xia & Lindell et al. to a positive one.

Content warning: Fedi drama/meta

I really hope I don’t get into problems for saying this but fedi admins desperately need to learn that being angry at someone isn’t enough reason to defederate them or their entire instance
This is not about any particular admin or instance, I’ve had to migrate instances due to shit like this once already and at this point I’m considering just self hosting my own already even tho I know how that’ll be an awful time
If you have a single user instance then sure do whatever tf you want, and if you’re on an instance for you and like 5 close friends who all agree to do something then go on.
But at the minute you have an instance with more people and for a more general public you have a responsibility at your hands. Modding is no easy job, but this doesn’t mean you can just go around defedding people you don’t like from your whole instance.
Y’all know you can block accounts from your account like normal users too right? You know you don’t need to make decisions for everyone in your instance in order to do this right?

Content warning: the knock-on effects of open sign-ups

What happens when you don't vet sign-ups is that mods on other instances who value the safety of their users have to pick up your slack.
The extensive work illustrated in the linked post (from @…) is also taking place to varying degrees on every other instance which still federates with mastodon.social and the other open-sign-up ones.
This is like house-sharing with someone who repeatedly leaves the front door unlocked.
Yes of course there are much horribler instances, but those tend to be blocked wholesale in my part of Fedi. Among the instances we do federate with, the spam & scam accounts I see are nearly always on m.s.
If mastodon.social mods (who apparently are paid!) were to make people introduce themselves before approving new accounts, then a lot of this spam wouldn't be getting in the door. Quash once at source, save multiple other people from having to repeat the same work.
I appreciate that they're trying to make it easy for newcomers to join, but at what cost? And is an intro message really beyond the typical non-techie person? I think there are some considerably higher barriers to adoption than that. Not convinced it's a good tradeoff.
I don't actually want this instance to defederate from m.s, because lots of the people I follow are on there. But I can really see why people sometimes do.

Why for all of us to take to heart?
Because we all need to remember that there are people in our circles for whom existence is resistance, which makes every single day a fight.
And we need to remember that it •matters• when we forcefully speak up for the humanity of others — or simply treat somebody who is vulnerable with basic decency and steadfast respect, in spite of the whole damned world.
And some days some little instance of one of those things — speaking up, decency, respect — that just feels like almost nothing in the moment might be the most important thing we do all day, and we won’t even know it.
