What do you mean that someone can buy your domain 12 days before it expires?
It happened to gup.pe who runs the group system a.gup.pe
Their domain was supposed to expire on the 15th, but the domain is already been bought by someone else to host spam articles.
According to Namecheap, there is no renewal period and no pendingDelete period, so customers must renew before the last 12 days of the domain, or it can be bought instantly within that 12-day period.
The whole domain registration industry is a cesspit of rentier crooks working for the benefit of rentier crooks. Including ICANN.
It was a mistake to end the InterNIC.

So my mom's setting up a non-profit, and she called me asking for help w/ domain registration. After getting her set up on namecheap, I was asking her what kind of website she was going to have, and she showed me a local competing NGO's site. "But it won't be this fancy, I don't think we can afford that."
So I click view-source on the website, and.. it's a Wordpress site with a free theme. I laughed.
Shout out to Namecheap which has a way to expedite a request to transfer a domain name away from them. Hover makes you wait the full five days.
I've now fully transferred everything in to Porkbun. For my simple needs Namecheap and Cloudflare would have been fine too. But Porkbun is nice, and cheap, and feels like they have innovated recently. Good choice for now, inevitably some private equity firm will buy it and enshittify it. (That's what ruined Gandi.)
Which registrar should I use for a bunch of .com
and .org
domains?
