That year, a touching photo surfaced online showing her recreating the playful expression she made in 1979, a wide, cheeky smile and raised eyebrows that had become part of rock history.
The original album cover featured Murtagh dressed as a diner waitress styled after the Statue of Liberty, holding a glass of orange juice in place of a torch and a menu instead of a tablet. Behind her was a whimsical model of the New York City skyline made entirely from breakfast items like cereal boxes, egg cartons, and cutlery, perfectly matching the album’s satirical take on American culture.
Kate Murtagh passed away in October 2017 at the age of 96, leaving behind one of the most memorable images in rock music history.
