👏 This is an appreciation #meme for @… and everything he does for #dotnet as an ecosystem.

XKCD dependency meme with Simon Cropp as precarious piece

Success
To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived ~ This is to have succeeded.

I plaster my stuff everywhere I can online, sometimes I even mention it at work when I'm called out.
I low-key crave for appreciation and attention even if I never state it directly.
And when I actually get it, I feel like the Coyote catching the Road Runner.
God effin' dammit, brain. Make up your mind.

The Coyote holding two boards with written text on them:

"Okay, wise guys, you always wanted to catch him"
"Now what do I do?"

Stationary of the chambers of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Supreme Court of the United States. On it is hand written:

My Dear Rabbi,

Purim is a special holiday because it celebrates Esther's part in saving her people. All in chambers will enjoy the treats you sent as I tell them why we celebrate the holiday.

About life and feelings, gloomy and private
The feelings we get from the activities we do could be classified as neutral, positive and negative.
Let's take developing #Gentoo as an example. It's something that makes me happy — but you can't (or at least I can't) just get the happiness and reject everything else. Most of the Gentoo work is basically neutral, even bland — a duty that takes a lot of time and effort, and probably a little of your health. It's statistically probable that you're going to get some positive feelings out of it — the joy of success, satisfaction, appreciation, awareness that you've done something good. But you also get negative feelings — from failures, frustration, negative interactions.
My hiking trips are like that too. My family believes that "I do it for pleasure" — but it's a harmful oversimplification and it only tells me that they even aren't trying to understand me. In fact, it's mostly a necessity, a way of solving specific problems that works for me — halting diabetes-related problems, coping with emotions. Of course there's a positive side to it — good mood, energy to survive another day, something the joy of visiting a new place, seeing something beautiful, finding a solution to a vexatious problem, positive interactions with people. But there are also negative feelings — anger and sadness from failure, stress from problems, negative contacts with people. Sometimes you end up slowly charging your social battery for a whole week, just to have one person destroy it all.
If you think about it, life's something like that. It's mostly a bland effort to survive every following day, sometimes interspersed with positive or negative moments.

imho, this image - the MAU curve of lemmy is the big news on the #fediverse. While also #mastodon and other platforms experienced peaks last summer, #lemmy is the only one that is consistently on the rise in 2024. Arguably, this is thanks to particular #affordances, like the fact that older posts of wider appreciation do not get overwhelmed in feeds.

Fediverse appreciation post.

I don’t know about the apps you’re using but at no point in the Fediverse have I lost track of a post I was reading because the feed auto-refreshed against my will.

Which happens to me regularly on LinkedIn. (And I remember happened on the other platforms I’ve left.) Which should make you acknowledge – if you haven’t done so already – how that is a design feature on the other platforms, not a bug.

Monographs that basically say "trust me, I'm a historian" re: sources and methodology drive me nuts. You made decisions about what collections to consult and what evidence to use, decisions that when explained help the reader evaluate your argument. It wouldn't kill you to write a few paragraphs on this process. Those who aren't interested in the method will skip it and those who are will have a deeper appreciation for all of your hard work. @…

This image captures a serene and stark winter landscape, dominated by a bridge arching gracefully over a frozen river. The scene is enveloped in a blanket of snow, emphasizing a tranquil yet cold atmosphere. Rendered in black and white, the photograph plays with shades of gray and deep blacks, creating a strong visual contrast that highlights the textures of the snow-covered surfaces and the architectural lines of the bridge. The dominant presence of snow suggests the depth of winter, while the…
In this vividly captured scene, a man stands amidst a snowy forest, embodying the essence of winter. Cloaked in a striking red coat that contrasts beautifully with the soft pink hues of the snow-blanketed background, he becomes an emblem of warmth in the cold. His face, framed by glasses, carries a gentle smile, suggesting a moment of joy or perhaps a serene appreciation for the surrounding nature. The forest, with its trees lightly dusted in snow, appears as a tranquil backdrop, enhancing the …

I got this cute print recently that includes a bat. It is the most recent bat-related thing I've acquired I think.

The print is square and in the centre it says "Protect our Pollinators." Around the outside are cute drawings of a bat, a butterfly, a bee, a moth, a bird, and a wasp.

A deep appreciation for the long term needs of your customers and potential customers should guide where in the system to continually improve. And my belief on how to continual improve is to create and continually improving management system with principles of experimentation... an understanding of the organization as a system and respect for people as principles to be guided by to achieve continual improvement...

Customer delight requires understanding your customers needs and desires. Often even your customers don’t understand these well. Businesses that have a deep appreciation for what their customers, and potential customers, desire and that create systems to deliver solutions that delight those customers benefit greatly from that effort.
