It does not happen every day that you get to see a book from 1464 (and get to touch it). Today I had the pleasure to see the insides of the archives of the Bavarian State (Germany) after having worked with archivists for the past months on data driven archiving.
Our next workshop with archivists from all over Germany and a group of data science students starts tomorrow.

1st day of the grateful dead caucus at #PCA is a wrap. presentations on podcasting as public history (yo!), meditations on taping & archiving (depicted, rick monture, his d5 & d6 decks), 3 *thick* papers on robert hunter's poetry (2 on "a strange music," 1 on "bride of entropy"), & paintings from steve hurlburt's "sky yellow, sun blue" project.

I don't really want to distribute articles unless they carry significance, importance, and perhaps rarity. This means that archiving software hardly makes sense, but then who is to decide whether keeping a copy of, say, The Great Gatsby is more important than an original copy of Linux 1.0? How can I possibly decide what to allow and what must be left out?
How can I narrow my scope? How can I decide what can stay and what must go?

I am archiving my super old Italian tech blog (started in 2008) with Archivebox, which works like a charm.
I am doing the archive because the website runs on a super-old WordPress version that I really have to update, and after all this time, everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

If you use Discord, you might wanna know this.
A service called Spy Pet is scraping Discord servers, archiving and tracking users' messages and activity, and then selling access to that data.
Spy Pet scrapes more than 10,000 Discord servers, and besides selling access to anyone with cryptocurrency, it offers the data for training AI models or to assist law enforcement agencies, according to its website.
Spy Pet claims to be tracking more than 14,000 servers, 600 millio…

This whole AI thing is just going way too far in my opinion. There is just no need for all of this, especially a damn mouse with an AI button on it.

Considering how we just lost Vice, kind of feel better about my choice to start my own lists of things. One thing I toyed with was providing PDFs of articles I recommend 30 days after the Penguin Pick just in case things go down like they did somewhere else. We need more proactive archiving.

Hey guys. I've decided to actually make the website. I've decided that it makes more sense as an archive or a library, for publishing finished works. Perhaps a forge project can come later. I believe I've written down the basics of what I want, but there's a tiny problem. We'll be archiving mostly physical objects, so we need digital formats that correspond to these physical items.
This is where I get stuck.

gently panicked article about modern archiving issues. mostly about #tv & #film but applies to #music, too. short translation: all #media

In fact, files end up corrupted, data is improperly transferred, hard drives fail, formats change, work simply vanishes. “It’s a silent fire,” says Linda Tadic, CEO of Digital Bedrock, an archiving servicer that works with studios and indie producers. “We find issues with every single show or film that we try to preserve.” So, what exactly has gone missing? “I could tell you stories — but I can’t, because of confidentiality.”
