I'm on a deep programming binge right now. My least favorite thing to do when I'm like this is trying to have coherent conversations with anyone. It's hard to string more than three words together right now.
I can still write just fine. It's interesting that it's mostly my verbal abilities that are affected. A friend of mine who used to be a developer once asked me in all seriousness, "Does programming cause brain damage? Do you recover from this?"

Abstract: A small phreatic sand dune aquifer lies along the shore of Haifa Bay. It has been exploited for its freshwater resources since the 1930s. During this time the salinity has increased continuously, partly by seawater intrusion due to overpumping. The chemistry of the young aquifer water is laterally variable and is characterized by excess SO$_4^{2-}$, high $Sr^{2 }$ concentrations above that of modern seawater, high alkalinity, and markedly enriched $\delta^{13}C_{DIC}$ values. Acidic winter rains, formed from $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ gaseous emissions from a nearby power station, leach the dry deposition that accumulated across the dune surface during the dry summers. The acidity also partially dissolves the aragonite sea shells in the dune sands, remnants of a previous marine transgression. As a consequence, this adds $Sr^{2 }$, $Ca^{2 }$ excess, and alkalinity, while leading to enriched $\delta^{13}C_{DIC}$ values, particularly during the winter, at which time the radiocarbon activity in the DIC is observed to decrease.

Abstract: We propose a comprehensive framework for solving overlapping-generations (OLG) models in continuous time with both idiosyncratic and aggregate risk. Our general characterization of equilibrium through the master equation operates on the joint distribution over the continuous idiosyncratic states, age and wealth. Our computational strategy is to take a finite-dimensional representation of this distribution as an input of a neural net which in turn outputs a finite-difference representation of the (conditional) value function. This idea can be applied generally to heterogeneous agent models with aggregate risk, and we call it finite-difference neural operator. Our method combines advantages from modern neural nets and traditional finite-difference methods: It is grid-free in the high-dimensional distribution, and retains control on boundary conditions in low-dimensional state variables. Moreover, our method is able to enforce shape constraints. We showcase its flexibility by solving a continuous-time OLG model with aggregate risk alone where we characterize the distribution by its supporting function; and to an OLG model with both types of risk.

Abstract: Galaxy clusters provide unique laboratories for studying environmental effects on galaxy evolution. The morphology--density ($T$--$\Sigma$) and morphology--cluster-centric radius ($T$--$R$) relations trace how galaxy morphology is influenced by the environment, but previous studies at intermediate redshifts have been limited in both sample size and radial coverage. We use the Euclid Quick Data Release 1 (Q1) visual morphology catalogue to measure the $T$--$\Sigma$ and $T$--$R$ relations for smooth, featured-or-disc, and barred galaxies in known clusters at $0.2\leq z\leq 0.5$, extending this analysis to large cluster-centric distances ($3 R_{500c}$) and studying their dependence on stellar mass. Using photometric redshifts and stellar masses provided by Euclid, we identify 1754 cluster members within $1.5 R_{500c}$, distributed across 71 clusters. We classify the identified galaxies as smooth, featured-or-disc, or barred using the predicted vote fractions provided by the Zoobot deep learning foundation model in the Q1 visual morphology catalogue. We confirm the $T$--$\Sigma$ relation in all the stellar mass ranges studied, with a stronger influence of the cluster environment on galaxy morphology in the densest parts of the cluster and closer to the cluster centre. Beyond $1.5 R_{500c}$, the morphological segregation weakens, with featured-or-disc galaxies overtaking smooth galaxies at the lowest densities, consistent with the growing contribution of field interlopers in the cluster outskirts. For barred galaxies, we find a tentative decline of the bar fraction toward lower densities that is most pronounced for the most massive galaxies. In conclusion, our results show that the cluster environment drives a progressive transformation of galaxy morphology, with the loss of disc structure becoming more pronounced towards the cluster core, where environmental processes act most efficiently.

Abstract: Section 1502 of the Dodd--Frank Act, enacted in 2010, requires U.S.-listed companies using tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold (3TG) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and adjoining countries to disclose information on the minerals' origins. Concerns have been raised that the regulation may have induced a de facto embargo through avoidance of sourcing from the covered region. However, how the price responsiveness of mineral exports evolved under changing institutional and market conditions remains insufficiently understood. Since tungsten production in the covered region is concentrated almost entirely in Rwanda, this study examines the price responsiveness of Rwandan tungsten exports from January 2009 to December 2023.
Because missing export quantity data prevent continuous observation of export unit values, we apply the identification approach of Nakano and Nishimura (2025), combining monthly mirror trade data from UN Comtrade with exchange rates and a world average price. An importer fixed-effects model is estimated using export value as the dependent variable, with the sample divided into four periods according to changes in the institutional and market environment.
The results reveal substantial temporal variation in price responsiveness. A statistically significant negative price response is observed in Period 1 ($\eta=-20.814$, $p<0.01$), disappears in Period 2 ($\eta=1.814$, $p>0.10$), reappears in Period 3 ($\eta=-5.277$, $p<0.01$), and disappears again in Period 4 ($\eta=0.440$, $p>0.10$). Coefficient-difference tests confirm significant changes between Periods 1 and 2 ($p=0.0021$) and between Periods 3 and 4 ($p=0.0006$). These findings suggest that the price responsiveness of Rwandan tungsten exports varied substantially over time rather than following a uniform trajectory after the regulation.

Abstract: We give a spectral description of the self-similar collapse profile of the Constantin-Lax-Majda (CLM) equation, the $a=0$ anchor of the generalized family $w_t a\,u\,w_x = u_x\,w$, $u_x = Hw$. Linearizing about the exact profile $\Omega(y) = -y/(y^2 1/4)$ and realizing $L_0$ as a closed operator on the origin-$H^2$ space, we prove three things at $a=0$. Its essential spectrum meets the closed half-plane $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda \ge -1/2\}$ in the single vertical line $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda = -1/2\}$: the line is placed by a log-widening Weyl sequence, and an explicit Hardy-Mellin resolvent bound constructively empties the rest of the half-plane apart from $0$ and $1$. Its full point spectrum over $\mathbb{C}$, on the odd realization, is exactly $\{0,1\}$, the scaling and time-shift symmetry modes, with no embedded eigenvalues; removing these by the standard modulation leaves a spectral gap of $1/2$ on $X$. The linear semigroup and its exact decay rate $e^{-\tau/2}$ are computed in closed form, but on a weighted space of the conjugated variable reached from $X$ by a bounded transfer map; we keep the two separate, since $L_0$ is non-normal and a spectral gap does not by itself give a decay rate in the $X$ norm. A realization dichotomy identifies the in-strip smear of generic discretizations as the faithful spectrum of the maximal $L^2$ realization, which origin-$H^2$ removes. For $a>0$ we prove a conditional two-line inclusion for each admissible smooth focusing profile, recompute the branch $c_l(a)$ of Lushnikov, Silantyev, and Siegel as a cross-check, and record the formal scaling-relevance exponent $s^*(a) = 1/c_l(a)$, below which fractional dissipation is asymptotically subdominant in self-similar variables for fixed sufficiently regular data. The contribution is the realization-dependent spectral picture of the collapse profile itself.
