Abstract: Studies have shown that visualization design affects interpretability when visualization interpretation is the user's sole task. However, in real-world settings, users often engage with visualizations while performing concurrent tasks, such as when users simultaneously monitor alerts or respond to messages. Such divided attention may alter how users interpret visualizations, potentially increasing the importance of designs that align with viewer expectations. We investigated this possibility through two experiments comparing visualization interpretation under single-task and dual-task conditions. Specifically, we examined how well-established inferred mappings between color, spatial position, and semantic concepts affect interpretation when users perform a concurrent task, both with unlimited viewing time (Exp. 1) and under limited viewing time (Exp. 2). Our results show that divided attention amplifies the performance gap between expectation-aligned and expectation-violating designs, affecting response time, interpretation accuracy, and the ability to produce a judgment under time constraints. To explain these results, we model the user's decision-making process using a Linear Ballistic Accumulator (LBA) framework. Our findings highlight the increased importance of aligning visualization designs with viewer expectations under divided attention and introduce a process-oriented modeling approach to understanding how expectation and multitasking shape visualization interpretation.

Abstract: This work presents LeakyLMs, a set of attacks that leak proprietary model, architecture, and deployment information from production language models. LeakyLMs is the first to demonstrate that key model and deployment details can be inferred using only token generation timing, even when interacting through remote APIs. LeakyLMs introduces two core attacks. The first attack targets inference optimizations and deployment strategies. For example, our attack detects whether a provider uses speculative decoding, a widely deployed inference-time optimization, and further identifies the context length of the draft model used in the pipeline. Our measurements show that Google Gemini Flash 2.5 uses speculative decoding with a draft context window of approximately 128K tokens. The second attack recovers key architectural properties, including the number of transformer layers, hidden dimension size, and number of attention heads. To achieve this, LeakyLMs builds a detailed and accurate model of token-generation timing on modern NVIDIA GPUs, characterizing how latency scales with model configuration and hardware parameters. The attack then performs a search over the architecture space using this timing model. In experiments with Llama models, the near-correct architectural configuration appears in the top-10 guesses more than 90% of the time.

"AI" has introduced whole new ways to be incredibly rude and our social habits have not yet adapted.
If you're feeling frustrated by only having "that's unethical" as a thing to push back on AI, consider "that's incredibly rude what you just did". Not all use is rude, but start paying attention to it.
A concrete example from this morning: Calling someone with a somewhat odd communication style "AI". That should be a thing that is kind of a grave accusation to make, and should be treated as incredibly rude if it's not coming with the evidence that sort of gravity demands.
Another one is prompting LLMs for others, that I've mentioned before.
Another is citing the LLM as an authority. "Claude says..." as a way to win an argument on authoritative rather than factual grounds.
You CAN get good information out of an LLM. But it requires the epistemic humility to do, and if you're not bringing that, it's pretty damn rude. "I believe because Claude says..." is not terrible. At least then we're talking about your belief and not Claude as authority.
Adding a bot to a channel without a chance for the people in it to push back is incredibly rude.
(It's not lost on me that a lot of things that are normal in business to inflict unilaterally on teams are things I consider extremely rude.)
