For a bit more interesting context, the Russian Empire at the time could be described as a white supremacist Christian nationalist autocracy that persecuted internal minorities. Russia was at the authoritarian backstop for all of Europe. They were a key part of the Holy Alliance that pushed hard for international censorship and autocratic alliances, and would even send troops to suppress democratic uprisings against autocrats in other countries.
They were so central to maintaining international autocracy that people on the international left would argue that, for freedom anywhere to survive "the tsar must die."
This is definitely just historical musing and not a #USPol post.
