In other words, if I'm not mistaken, flagging FreeBSD-base meta packages as vital does not necessa…

"Another great abode is there, which is named Valaskjšlf. Odin possesses that dwelling. The gods made it and thatched it with sheer silver, and in this hall is the Hliðskjšlf, the high seat so called. Whenever Allfather sits in that seat, he surveys all lands."

Photo of the so-called Odin from Lejre, a small cast silver figurine from Lejre in Denmark. It depicts an individual on a throne, wearing a floor-length dress, an apron, four bead necklaces, a neck ring, a cloak and a rim-less hat. Two birds are seated on the armrests and the back of the throne features the heads of two animals. The figurine has inlay of black niello (a black coloured alloy) and some gilding.
The figurine can be interpreted as the god Odin sitting on his throne Hliðskjálf, fro…

@… the intention was (still is) for base packages to be protected against by deletion by people who wish to run an operating system without an operating system.
OSlessness for leanness, and itsnotmyfaultability.

I'm not a proponent of software stores, but whilst updating FreeBSD KDE (in the cli) tonight a notification from Discover popped up about updates.
And, to my surprise, it showed all available updates: FreeBSD base, FreeBSD packages, like micro, obviously KDE applications, as well as an update for the theme I'm using.
Never seen that before on Linux, wonder if that's a FreeBSD specific thing 🤔
Either way it looks like the software store is finally reaching full pote…

One thing that, to my surprise, sells really quickly is old computer books from the 1980s (stuff like "Machine Programs for the Apple II").
I guess perhaps they're cheap to ship (in the US, the post office has a special low rate for packages with books or music) and nice small treats for people?
Regardless, it's a nice win, I free up space and get some pocket money, the books go to someone who will love and care for them. :)

I bought a pair of 25' Intellitron stainless steel whip antennas from GigaParts while they were on sale ("two is one and one is none" and the second one tipped me me into "free shipping" making its marginal cost pretty low). On removing them from the packages, however, loose roll pins fell out, and the bases fell off the antennas. Both of them.
A roll pin is an inappropriate fastener to use to connect two concentric thin-walled tubes, so this is a design failure. And the roll pins are …

A view into the bottom end of a whip antenna, showing yellow metal tabs for better electrical connections between the concentric sleeves, stops preventing collapsing the antenna too far, and a set of holes. An out-of-focus roll pin is in the background.
close-up view of roll pin. Only one end is tapered, and the pin is not straight.
External view of base sleeve that fell off the whip. It has flat sides where the holes for the roll pin go, and is tapered from the base where a 3/8-24 threaded stud is visible towards the open end at the lower left.
