Radiotracer photoluminescence for element-specific identification of color centers

Abstract: We report on the implementation of a radiotracer photoluminescence spectroscopy setup at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at CERN, enabling element-specific identification of optically active defects in solids. The method combines radioactive ion implantation with optical spectroscopy, allowing the temporal evolution of photoluminescence signals to be correlated directly with nuclear decay. The setup is currently optimized for color centers in diamond and related wide-bandgap materials and enables room-temperature measurements. The system consists of an optical microscope coupled to a fiber-fed Czerny-Turner spectrometer with a liquid-nitrogen-cooled CCD detector, providing the stability required for long-duration measurements. As a proof-of-principle, radioactive $^{75}$Ga was implanted into diamond as a precursor to produce $^{75}$Ge impurities. The photoluminescence band extending from 600 nm, corresponding to the well-known GeV$^{-}$ center, exhibits an exponential decay with a half-life of $82.3^{ 2.5}_{-2.3} \mathrm{min}$, in agreement with the known $\beta^{-}$ decay half-life of $^{75}$Ge of $82.78(4) \mathrm{min}$. This establishes a direct and unambiguous correlation between the observed spectral feature and its germanium origin. These results demonstrate the capability of the setup to perform element-specific optical spectroscopy and extend radiotracer methods to color centers in wide-bandgap materials, taking advantage of the uniquely broad range of radioactive isotopes available at ISOLDE.

Abstract: The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) is a deep, high resolution imaging campaign that used the 1 deg$^2$ MegaCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to carry out a comprehensive optical survey of the Virgo cluster, from its core to its virial radius. The NGVS covers a contiguous area of 104 deg$^2$ (8.63 Mpc$^2$ at the 16.5 Mpc distance of Virgo) in the $u^*$-,$g$-,$i$-, and $z$-band, with additional limited coverage in $r$. In this paper, we present the final catalog of Virgo galaxies across the entire NGVS area. The catalog includes 3680 galaxies considered to be $bona~fide$ members of the cluster, spanning a factor of 2.5 million in luminosity, from $g = 8.42$ mag to $g = 24.41$ mag ($M_g = -22.67$ mag to $M_g = -6.68$ mag). With 2100 previously uncataloged galaxies, the NGVS catalog augments the number of known Virgo members by a factor 2.3. The catalog is complete down to $g = 18.6$ mag ($M_g=-12.5$ mag, corresponding to a stellar mass $M_* \sim 1.6\times10^7~M_{\odot}$ for an old stellar population) and 50% complete at $g = 22.0$ mag ($M_g=-9.1$ mag, $M_* \sim 6.2\times10^5~M_{\odot}$), three magnitudes deeper than the venerable Virgo Cluster Catalog (VCC), which for over 40 years has served as the reference standard for Virgo. Photometric and structural parameters are derived for all NGVS galaxies and presented in a series of tables, alongside nuclear and morphological classification, as well as stellar masses and, when available, radial velocities.

The spectral picture of self-similar collapse in the Constantin-Lax-Majda equation

Abstract: We give a spectral description of the self-similar collapse profile of the Constantin-Lax-Majda (CLM) equation, the $a=0$ anchor of the generalized family $w_t a\,u\,w_x = u_x\,w$, $u_x = Hw$. Linearizing about the exact profile $\Omega(y) = -y/(y^2 1/4)$ and realizing $L_0$ as a closed operator on the origin-$H^2$ space, we prove three things at $a=0$. Its essential spectrum meets the closed half-plane $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda \ge -1/2\}$ in the single vertical line $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda = -1/2\}$: the line is placed by a log-widening Weyl sequence, and an explicit Hardy-Mellin resolvent bound constructively empties the rest of the half-plane apart from $0$ and $1$. Its full point spectrum over $\mathbb{C}$, on the odd realization, is exactly $\{0,1\}$, the scaling and time-shift symmetry modes, with no embedded eigenvalues; removing these by the standard modulation leaves a spectral gap of $1/2$ on $X$. The linear semigroup and its exact decay rate $e^{-\tau/2}$ are computed in closed form, but on a weighted space of the conjugated variable reached from $X$ by a bounded transfer map; we keep the two separate, since $L_0$ is non-normal and a spectral gap does not by itself give a decay rate in the $X$ norm. A realization dichotomy identifies the in-strip smear of generic discretizations as the faithful spectrum of the maximal $L^2$ realization, which origin-$H^2$ removes. For $a>0$ we prove a conditional two-line inclusion for each admissible smooth focusing profile, recompute the branch $c_l(a)$ of Lushnikov, Silantyev, and Siegel as a cross-check, and record the formal scaling-relevance exponent $s^*(a) = 1/c_l(a)$, below which fractional dissipation is asymptotically subdominant in self-similar variables for fixed sufficiently regular data. The contribution is the realization-dependent spectral picture of the collapse profile itself.

Abstract: The CERN Large Hadron Collider will be upgraded to the High-Luminosity LHC, increasing the particle-collision rate and the demands on detector readout. A key element of this upgrade is the new CMS Tracker, whose silicon sensors will generate data at an aggregate rate of about 10 TB/s. This data must be routed efficiently to processing systems and filtered before storage. Serenity-S1 is an ATCA readout and data-processing card based on an AMD Virtex UltraScale VU13P FPGA with 128 high-speed serial transceivers. Twenty 12-channel Samtec FireFly optical modules provide up to 120 transmit and 120 receive channels at line rates of up to 25 Gb/s, while an additional optical module supports CMS Tracker links at up to 10 Gb/s per channel. The modular optical layout, combined with the large FPGA, makes Serenity-S1 suitable for several applications within and beyond CMS. ATCA provides the power and cooling required for operation in the CMS service cavern. Low-level management and the IPMI interface are provided by an OpenIPMC mezzanine, while an AMD Kria K26 system-on-module running AlmaLinux 9 performs higher-level board management and application control. Firmware and software frameworks provide common infrastructure so that users can focus on application-specific logic. The paper describes the hardware, firmware and software architecture of Serenity-S1 and its deployment in CMS Tracker integration and R&D activities.
