This is the most detailed picture of a human cell ever made 🧪

Sam Bousaba on Instagram: "This is a single human cell. The white filament-like structures are microtubules, and the small colored particles are ribosomes. Your body contains on the order of ~37 trillion cells. Each cell functions like a highly organized, self-regulating factory operating continuously. There is no central “supervisor”—yet thousands of processes run in parallel with remarkable coordination. Every ribosome is constantly building proteins by linking amino acids together. In eukaryotic (human) cells, a ribosome typically adds about 5–10 amino acids per second (not ~20). Since a single cell can contain millions of ribosomes, protein production is massive—resulting in millions to tens of millions of peptide bonds formed per second per cell. The microtubules act as an internal transport network. Motor proteins such as kinesin move along these tracks, carrying cellular cargo. They “walk” step by step using ATP, at speeds of roughly 500–1000 nanometers per second. Each cell contains a dense network of these filaments, with many motor proteins moving simultaneously. Just beneath the cell membrane lies the actin cortex, a dynamic meshwork that helps maintain cell shape and resist mechanical stress. This structure is continuously remodeled—assembled and disassembled—allowing the cell to adapt to its environment. Now scale this up. Across ~37 trillion cells, each containing millions of ribosomes and hundreds to thousands of mitochondria, your body is constantly producing energy in the form of ATP. Total ATP turnover is enormous—roughly equivalent to your body weight in ATP recycled every day. The DNA in a single human cell, if stretched out, measures about 2 meters. Across all your cells, this would span distances comparable to traveling from Earth to the Sun and back many times (the exact multiple depends on assumptions about cell count and DNA packing). None of these processes are under conscious control. They began when you were a single cell and have continued uninterrupted ever since."

Wild to imagine scanning Pokestops in Pokemon GO will make drones more efficient at attacking your city.
Has Black Mirror done an episode where they deploy GPS jamming against attacking drones but it falls back to spatial data built from the hero's own Pokescans to continue pursuit?

Ray-Column IPRM: Restoring Radial Spectral Scale to Structure-Based Turbulence Modeling

Abstract: The particle representation model (PRM) and interacting particle representation model (IPRM) describe homogeneous turbulence through orientation-conditioned structural states. In their original form, the conditional state is organized by the unit spectral direction, while the radial spectral coordinate is integrated out. We introduce a scale-conditioned Ray-Column extension in which the spectral vector is decomposed into orientation and radial wavenumber, and the conditional structure state is projected onto finite radial bands.
The formulation starts from the continuum spectral tensor and is then reduced to the ray-packet ensemble sums used in the implementation. The bands are projections of an orientation-wavenumber tensor density and retain scale-conditioned structural populations for closure evaluation. The rapid dynamics remain ray-packet resolved, while the nonlinear slow and terminal closure coefficients are evaluated from band-aggregate structure tensors formed by integrating over orientation and wavenumber within each band. The present reference closure omits conservative cascade modeling among bands.
A reference closure is built from PRM rapid kinematics, band-local effective-gradient response, slow rotational randomization, and an active large-scale enstrophy (LSE) terminal-drain map. In the active-LSE closure, the misalignment-sensing factor Psi_fd regularizes the LSE structure-to-dissipation map; the Ray-Column formulation evaluates this map on band-aggregate structural populations. The model is assessed in irrotational strain, homogeneous shear, elliptic-streamline, and rotating-shear configurations. The rotating-shear comparison with filtered LES data illustrates the payoff of retaining band information: filtered or low-pass observables can be formed before scale information is lost in the one-point reconstruction.

Since it was relevant to a discussion I just had on here and is something most people probably haven't thought about much (unless you've taken one of a handful of philosophy classes), I thought I'd try to lay out a key piece of Descartes' Meditations (#philosophy

RE: #Boycott or economic blackout, #GeneralStrike, and #TaxStrike are escalations. Get in the streets and stay there. This is like a bouncer putting someone's arm behind their back and moving them.
Sometimes people try to slip out of that and fight back. Imagine if a bouncer just let themself get pummeled because they weren't ready, even after the belligerent asshole telegraphed it. A lot of bouncers take martial arts, not because they use it as a first response but because they want to be ready for those edge cases.
Armed revolution is like a bouncer getting down to brawl and calling in their buddy with the zip ties and bear mace. It's not something anyone starts with, or anyone wants to escalate to, but some people can't take a hint and are incapable of doing what's best for everyone.
Always know your next step (even if you hope you don't have to take it).
Imagine if a bouncer was just like, "oh, I asked him nicely but he told me to fuck off. I guess the creep who's punching random people and pissing in the corner runs the bar now."

So yes, we may get a very strong El Niño event this year, with record high global temperatures and weather disruption in many places.
And no, it shouldn't distract us from reducing emissions to bend the underlying warming trend.
But we won't be able to ignore it, a sneak preview of things to come.
