Welp, that’s a first: I had to actually break the glass in case of fire.
This evening, I used a fire extinguisher on a brush fire that had started near a house just three doors down from our beach rental. The owners weren’t home, and if it hadn’t been stopped, it easily could’ve taken the house with it.
Neighbors came running, the kids were thrilled by the whole thing, and I’m still kind of buzzing.

We prove that the two cornerstones of mean-field spin glass theory -- the Parisi variational formula and the ultrametric organization of pure states -- break down under heavy-tailed disorder. For the mixed spherical $p$-spin model whose couplings have tail exponent $α<2$, we attach to each $p$ an explicit threshold $H_p^{*}$.
