One of the points in Luke Kemp's "Goliath's Curse", which really stuck with me:
Bronze age kings justified their rule by claiming to be descendents of the gods or being especially favored by them.
Today's billionaires use similar justification techniques by claiming to settle Mars.
(I never really considered this direct connection.)
