Shape-retaining beam-like morphing structures via localized snap through
In this study, we present a concept of morphing structure -- featuring an arch mounted on a compliant base -- that can be reconfigured via snap-through buckling and leverages bistability to retain its morphed shape. We show that one-dimensional arrays of such units yield beam-like structures that, upon localized snapping, can attain multiple, morphologically distinct stable shapes. Within first-principles calculations, we explore superconductivity in Ca-intercalated bilayer silicene compound, Si2CaSi2. This arises from the coupling of interlayer flower-like Γ-centered Fermi surface formed by the hybridization of Ca-3d and Si-3pz orbitals with low-energy out-of-plane vibrations enabled by silicene's buckling. We analyze the three-dimensional buckling of an elastic filament in a shear flow of a viscous fluid at low Reynolds number and high Peclet number. We apply the Euler-Bernoulli beam (elastica) theoretical model. An overdetermined problem in 2D linearised hydrostatics
In two spatial dimensions, we discuss the relation between the solvability of Schiffer's overdetermined problem and the optimality, among sets of prescribed area, of the first eigenvalue in the buckling problem for a clamped plate and that of the first eigenvalue of the Stokes operator. For the latter, we deduce that the minimisers under area constraint that are smooth and simply connected must be discs from the fact that a pressureless velocity is a necessary condition of optimality.
