We also talked about a "Chaos Monkey" exercise, where random people would be chosen to step out for a period of time to see how it impacts the organization. This really helps identify organizational over-reliance on people who could burn out/be arrested/otherwise be neutralized. It forces an organization to be more resilient because disruption becomes a normal thing that people must adapt to. When a real disruption happens, it's already something people have practiced for.

Ruth_Mottram - This is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated analysis, exploring convincingly why birth rates are crashing basically everywhere and while there are certain many factors, the smoking gun is actually a smartphone.
So what to do about it? I think I agree with the conclusions, housing and financial support is one element, equality between sexes in household tasks certainly another, but finally, perhaps our job as parents is to inculcate the habit of socialising with others into our kids, especially when they get to the teenage years.

Sounds like first policies are going to be more oil drilling and taking "control" of Thames Water.
Note that more oil drilling will NOT reduce the price of energy to the consumer, nor do much to increase sovereign energy independence. It will however mean lots of profits to the party donors from the oil industry, and of course mean more heat-domes and wildfires and floods and rising sea levels. More death from heatstroke.
Note also that "control" of Thames Water is not nationalization, not "ownership", it's just really more (likely toothless) regulation of private industry.

I've been talking before why money won't solve the burnout problem. But let's for a minute assume that you really wanted to help people maintaining #FreeSoftware by paying them. The problem is that:
1. You have to pay them a living wage.
While all monetary help is appreciated by developers, they need a living wage. Not "that should prevent you from starving to death" but the kind of money that can support a honest (but not lavish) lifestyle: pay the bills, feed your family, cover other living costs such as repairs, clothes, appliances, and let you save enough for future emergencies.
It's simple as that. If you can't do that, they're going to need a dayjob. If they're lucky, it won't collide with their #FLOSS work. If they're not, it will kill them. Or they'll fall somewhere in the middle, slowly burning out until they can neither maintain their projects, nor work.
2. You need to guarantee that the payouts will continue.
People need security. They're not going to stay unemployed, let alone quit their job or turn down a job offer, unless they either have good guaranties or substantial savings (or they're in a really bad shape and wouldn't be able to handle the job anyway). The job market is hell, and people just know that when the payments stop, they may not be able to find a job soon, let alone a good job. Even "passively" looking for a job can burn you out.
So yeah, one-off payments and pinky swears won't do. And it isn't even a matter of whether we can trust you; it's a matter if you'll actually be able to continue paying us. And honestly, I don't really know how to solve that. Perhaps by paying up front, but for how long? Finding a job may take more than a year, finding a good job may be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
3. It can't end up being a job.
Perhaps most difficult of all, these payments can't really come with explicit obligations. I mean, that's the whole point: you want to support FLOSS, not turn it into a corporate project. You want the maintainer to remain free and enjoy the work. That is unlikely to happen if their livelihood is now dependent on your satisfaction. And even if it isn't, I for example would still feel indebted to whoever's paying me to do FLOSS, even if they really didn't expect anything in return, and would fall into a spiral of guilt-inflicted burnout if I failed to maintain the software satisfactorily.

In addition to the obvious travesty here of turning curriculum into marketing material for a specific industry (and an investment bubble industry at that!), there’s a larger principle here:
It’s a terrible idea to let politicians set curricular mandates. Even the well-meaning ones crash and burn. This sets off that alarm bell for me.

The newest version of my preferred test runner requires Node 22 and my package supports Node 18 .

Yesterday was another interesting solar record: the 88.6 kWh of solar production didn't quite beat Saturday's record of 93... but our grid power consumption was the lowest I can recall seeing.
We consumed only 111 kWh, compared to the 150ish we more typically burn. Not entirely sure why... we didn't do any laundry or much in the way of cooking and it was a nice day so we had the windows open and no heat or A/C usage, which probably was part of it. Lab power demand was about…

It's also important to recognize that tech oligarchs won't let this die. It's too important to them. This is part of the boss fight right here. They will take everything from us to coerce us into making LLMs profitable, to deskilling our labor and selling (skewed) human knowledge back to us at a premium. They will take away every benefit the state has, kill as many people as it takes to funnel every penny of government subsidy into this. They will burn every drop of subsidized oil. Those ICE camps are gonna be used for something. If it takes right wing death squads, they'll do it.
They will kill every last one of us to realize total domination. We have to be ready for that, and prepare accordingly. As many lives as have been taken by people with similar ideologies, those ideologies have always lost. If we know what's coming and prepare for it then they will lose faster, and at a lower cost.

This is not some sort of purity test by the way (I’m a customer of some companies that I find repugnant, out of necessity; e.g. Amazon).

I sometimes write scripts in Windows #PowerShell because it's a programming tool that is widely available in my environment without requiring any additional installs. I find the syntax to be clunky, but it's capable.
As I've noted before, I'm required to use Copilot at work, so I use it for tasks like this to burn tokens and earn work termination deferment points.

Finished reading "Seasons of Glass and Iron" by Amal El-Mohtar.
A short story collection — fairy tales, fantasy, and poems centering women's resilience and identity, gathered from years of El-Mohtar's commissioned work.
"John Hollowback and the Witch" is a delightful slow burn: a man guilty of wronging women, yet innocent in having no memory of it. "The Truth About Owls" handles displacement better than most novels.
