Now on the blog of the Software Sustainability Institute: My blog post on last year's #citizenscience for health conference #cs4h at the University of Twente. software.ac.uk/blog/software-c

It's funny how no-one's ever suggested 'denizen science' as a term that avoids the awkwardness of citizen science.

I also enjoyed 'Dark citizen science' by James Riley and Will Mason-Wilkes, proposing the 'Five-Ps of citizen science' (Purpose, Process, Perceptibility, Power and Public Effect) and comparing Galaxy Zoo and reCAPTCHA.
Also they cover my minor obsession since 2014 or so: 'when projects are coupled with AI, citizen scientists may be clicking their active roles into the grave'

Fellow AutSPACEs team member Georgia & I wrote a blog post for the Software Sustainability Institute. We outline how we are approaching user testing for our co-designed #citizenscience platform on sensory processing and #autism.
It's great timing, as we're currently running the second round of tests after having (hopefully) improved the platform!

We've extended our survey to the end of the month as the response has been amazing. We want to encourage folk who weren't sure if they should take the survey to respond. Work in progress, 'failed' or incomplete projects, long-past projects - it's all helpful.
Our survey should take about 15 mins, closes April 30:

MM: Different CS publication types:
- "doing CS”, e.g. using CS as a method but paper is describing findings from the project
- "science of citizen science", how is CS done?
- “Mix": presents both the research as well as the practice of CS
- “meta level": discuss CS in a larger context/academic fields
- “other”/“unclear”: Does not fit, or is it even related to CS?
Method: Search WoS (😭) for "citizen science", papers between 2010-22, at least one EU-based author: 1600 papers.

MGA: People also focused on an idea of "science for all", being inclusive. Some people also think about "citizen science as an instrument to collect data”. #ecsa2024

MGA: Did semi-structured interviews with policy makers, only 1 out of 4 had heard of citizen science. People assumed that it was about “science of the community", i.e. science about how a given community does things. #ecsa2024

MGA: When it comes to trust into citizen science, majority of policy makers had inherent trust into CS-generated data. Have confidence in their own community members. #ecsa2024

Friederike Barkmann talking about a citizen science project with pupils on the impact of green roofs for buildings. A pupil's feedback: ”We were allowed to go on the roof of our school", which I think is a really fun way of transgressing 'school rules' as a fun side-effect/motivator. #ecsa2024

Moritz Müller presenting a bibliometric analysis of the CS literature to quantify the evolution of citizen science:
CS as a field is growing, but lack of recent bibliometric analyses, tries to fill that gap. Explore if/how CS publications track the increase of funding etc. Also looking at how types of CS publications have changed.
