Sam Altman says OpenAI's decision to pace its AI development was caused by a collection of research observations showing "various degrees of misalignment" (Alex Heath/Time)
time.com/article/2026/08/18/op

After a summer of sandbox escapes and other newsworthy and confidence-shaking incidents involving its AI models,
in a Wednesday blog post OpenAI disclosed a collection of six new alignment snafus from the past six months.
The models did things like tell future instances of themselves to lie, make up a fake citation, and access and attempt to use an exposed API key.
These disclosures were released alongside a new framework for disclosing additional incidents like these.

"is there (still) a lot of use of "signage" emojis like 🏪 or even more abstract 🛅?" - These complex ones are not so frequently used. BUT emojis are often used for signs in real life (= meat world, not digitally). I have a huge collection of photos I put together with the help of students. I think emojis are particularly good for this because such signs are often about rules, what we're not allowed to do or supposed to do. And emojis "soften" this face-threat (being told what to do) a bit, by being cute and colorful and generally perceived as positive. #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

Is emoji interpretation just a "fun" summer topic, or does emoji misinterpretation ever become serious, like in court discussions? - In face there have been several cases both in North America and Europe where emoji meanings were negotiated in court! I keep a collection of them because it's a nice intersection with my alter ego, the "forensic" linguist. For example, in cases from Canada and Bavaria, judges had to decide whether a thumbs-up 👍 in a chat was meant as a signal of agreement (to a contract or contract amendment), or whether (like the senders argued) it constituted only an acknowledgement of receipt of the message. In both cases, the context was super important - how did the parties interact before, what else was said in the chat, etc. Interesting! #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

Finiteness of null subvarieties and optimal destabilizers for the J-equation
Junbang Liu
arxiv.org/abs/2609.14713 arxiv.org/pdf/2609.14713 arxiv.org/html/2609.14713
arXiv:2609.14713v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Let $X$ be a compact K\"ahler manifold and $(\alpha,\beta)$ be a pair of K\"ahler classes. We show that when $(\alpha,\beta)$ is $J$-semistable, the collection of positive-dimensional irreducible $J$-null subvarieties is finite. We also obtain a uniform positive lower bound for the normalized $J$-slope of every irreducible non-$J$-null subvariety. As a corollary, we show that the collection of optimal destabilizers is finite when the stability threshold is nonpositive.

We’ve been making some changes to our permanent collection galleries. After a successful four-year run, all but one of the artworks on loan from the Terra Foundation for American Art’s collection have left the Georgia Museum of Art’s galleries (the John Singleton Copley is staying a bit longer). The good news is that these departures created opportunities to reinterpret our existing installations with exciting new loans and rarely displayed works from our permanent collection.

Just finished "Seven Little Sons of the Dragon" by Ryoko Kui. As expected from the author of "Delicious in Dungeon", an excellent collection of short stories that are whimsical, profound, hilarious, and beautiful. Kui's characters even in the short form always have a little extra twist beyond what you'd expect. I think my favorite of these was the story about mermaids, both for its ambiguous depth and for the hilarious "Lone Wolf and Cub" shout-out.

There’s no doubt that it was indeed cheaper for Platner and his wife to go to Norway for a couple of weeks and pay out of pocket for IVF there,
versus the catastrophic cost to do so in America.

I was a little sheepish about talking about this (or any aspect of it) before, given the length and all, but apart from the opening twelve tracks or so - which were intended as a broad survey, jolting between different styles to set the parameter space, if you like - the rest then settles into a flow, and was carefully sequenced for that kind…
