Interesting LLM nuance: why does using phrases like "you're a pen-tester" cause chatbots to emit substantially different predictions, and basically "follow" that instruction? Because of how LLMs work, this implies that the training data has plenty of examples where real humans told each other that they were some role and the humans just immediately jumped into that role without question or intervening dialogue. But that's not something people do in normal conversation. Even in playing-with-kids contexts if you drop that out of the blue you're probably going to get "no I want to be a robot" or "but you were the elephant last time!" rather than immediate assumption of the assigned role.
It's possible that training LLMs to predict immediate role-assumption is something the big models spent a lot of manual effort on. But what I think is more likely is: it's the legacy of role-play forums! All those reams of pages of teenagers (yes, often horny) pretending to be Captain Kirk or their own incredibly cringe "cool" character (but honestly, why call it cringe, let kids be kids and have fun)...
So next time you "tell" a chatbot "you're a..." to get it to do what you want, I'm pretty sure you have an RP forum teen from the past to thank :)

Israel wants to destroy Iran’s nuclear program. But should it have nuclear weapons itself?
Israel’s avowed goal in the Middle East war is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Yet, the double standard associated with this is hardly sustainable in the long run.
The worst-kept secret in the world of nuclear politics is that Israel possesses a formidable arsenal of nuclear weapons.
My mother is making fun of me that I'm only talking to seniors. But let's be honest, whom else would I talk to? Seniors seem to be practically the only people interested in engaging in a conversation with strangers on the train, and being able to keep it ongoing. - Per-day filter for new comments highlighting is probably too broad in scope if the conversation is too active.

I had a conversation with a friend who lives in Australia today. He said that his family members with teenage kids are saying that it’s ‘business as usual’ for Australian teens on social media. They find workarounds that quickly get shared amongst them. I wonder if the Australian government will do an assessment of the impact of their recent ban. It would be cynical if they didn’t.

To be clear: with these people I always look to opportunism before conspiracy to explain their actions — but when you have this kind of rapidly convergent manufactured consensus within a political group, the distinction between those two becomes blurry.
Looking for malicious premeditation is probably just pursuing a red herring. I’m more interested in how they form their response, what they’re doing to try to shape public conversation, social media, the press.

It's a hacky way to end the story. Garbage and trite, but that's not the point. The point is that the system prompt explicitly says to give back the original text with improvements. Instead it finished the story from the end.
Why? Because I injected into the conversation and made it "think" that *it* had written the story and was finishing it.
That variant of the story used <start_of_turn> and <end_of_turn> (the model's tokens) instead of <|im_start|>/<|im_end|> which are (if I'm not mistaken) ChatGPT tokens.
