Daily Inspiration: "Always be prepared to know how little you know!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
One thing that I have always understood about my ability to interpret the future is that while I know a lot of stuff, there is a lot I do not know. I think that's a good thing, because that fact is the basis for my relentless curiosity, and I have long believed that curiosity is the key to success for anyone. If you ever lose your creativity, you lose your initiative. Lose your ini…

Clearly a scam, a wallet drainer probably (see the actual email address). I have been under siege from various crypto scammers. One from blockfi looked so convincing, it was nuts. I really want to click on this one but will have to keep my curiosity on the sidelines.

Just out of curiosity: did you know that the musician Maurice Ravel was Basque?
Letter to the Person Who Carved His Initials into the Oldest Living Longleaf Pine in North America
by Matthew Olzmann
Tell me what it’s like to live without
curiosity, without awe. To sail
on clear water, rolling your eyes
at the kelp reefs swaying
beneath you, ignoring the flicker
of mermaid scales in the mist,
looking at the world and feeling
only boredom. To stand
on the precipice of some wild valley,
the eagles circling, a herd of…
Our paper has been recently accepted and published in a springer journal. Out of curiosity I clicked the link on an offer to order some reprints, like in the old days.
25 copies of the paper that we have written, cost almost 900 USD. #Springer have mostly contributed by destroying the typesetting, and then printing on paper. 🤔
I seriously hope nobody is using this service. And that we will replace this predatory system with independent archival storage soon.
Just out of curiosity, I looked up when the last Federal Circuit en banc design patent case, #EgyptianGoddess, was argued (6/2/08) and decided (9/22/08).
If #LKQvGM were to follow the same timeline, we could expect a decision around late May.
I am getting old.
The many hoops of pre-requisite knowledge and specific software skills and ‘free by request to download at one not-Google place’ is more hoopage than my mild curiosity in a local LLM can manage.
I’m going for my nap. I’ll wake up for my evening meds later. https://mastodon.socia…

#WordWeavers Day 19: What are your MCs' first memories?
The soft light from the dawn of time on his newborn being. Mother's voice, singing life into the world. Father's baritone, supporting and loving her with a passion. Service providers are closer than ever to phasing landlines out: in California, AT&T proposed doing away with landline phones altogether, appealing to the state’s public utilities commission for permission to cut service. The telecommunications giant called landlines a “historical curiosity that’s no longer necessary”.
WRONG!
navy curiosity about classified capabilities and hiding your cards
I mean, hiding your cards has maybe a few players. The public of low quality adversaries, medium quality ones, and ones you assume always watch...
I wonder if Navy ships have like, 3 different speeds.
The declassified one they run at during peace time
One they as captains are at discretion to break but don't publish.
One they can't break unless it's war with a near peer adversary.
Same with detection capability
A distance they acknowledge they can see at / enemy combatants know / get told to piss off at
A distance they can quietly prepare at / spies might know if they were aboard the ship / ready stations
The true distance they can see at war time but they just have to quietly take the missile to the face and act "surprised" once it gets within X miles / console intentionally nerfed at peace time
That's just a guess
One question, just out of curiosity: Considering that in most of USA applies that (not so) funny thing called "at will employment", there is no legal rule that limits the maximum number of layoffs a company can make in a given window of time in USA, right?

Being able to participate in democracy should not be this hard.
I received a new driver’s license in the mail, but I was still not registered to vote.
The deadline to register was getting closer.
I called my county’s voter registrar’s office. The clerk on the phone said she was not sure what went wrong.
That’s when my journalistic curiosity took over. I started calling my sources to ask why someone’s voter registration applications would be landing in the void.

Using storytelling to foster the teaching and learning of gravitational waves physics at high-school

Looking at the beautiful standard for "normal-gauge traction vehicles, classification and marking", I'd like to point out one more historical curiosity.
Electric multiple units are classified as designed "for local and suburban traffic, on lines with low and high platforms" (EN) and "for suburban traffic, on lines with high platforms" (EW) [1].
Let's note that the standard dates back to a time when high-floor railcars were a norm. According to Wikipedia, EN57's "floor is 1153 mm above top of rail" [2]. For these EMUs, the difference between "high-platform" and "low-platform" units boiled down to the latter having stairs leading down. So both kinds of units could be used on high-platform lines.
Most of the modern EMUs are low-floor, and are not suitable for high platforms. Therefore, they technically do not meet the definition for "EN" marking. For example, the Newag Impuls trains ordered by SKM Trójmiasto (the urban train operator) had their train floor height specially raised to 960 mm ATR [3].
