Finally finished (save last corrections):

How I abandoned Windows, tried various Linux distributions, and eventually ended up with Debian and Fluxbox.

Compared to a traditional desktop environment, MangoWM feels abstracted from actually using my computer. Like doing surgery through a keyhole incision rather than grabbing a scalpel and digging in. Running an ROV instead of scuba diving. Watching TV through binoculars. It's bizarre, alienating, frustrating. Looks cool tho!

@…
FreeBSD pkg manager to default to yes is a bad idea, because non-base packages so often disappear.
For example: an upgrade that removes an entire desktop environment, without asking the operator whether removal is wanted, is probably not a good upgrade.

In the absence of meaningful progress from the KDE team before their stated X11 rugpull, SonicDE (a continuation of KDE-X11) may offer some hope, or if nothing else a bridge to some future æon when KDE-Wayland is finally sufficiently functional: sonicde.org/

@… thanks, which desktop environment?
What happens when you switch to e.g. ttytv0 or ttyv1?
Non-base packages from quarterly, or latest?
My current tests aim to identify a port that causes (or features in) the regression.

Someday, we will have a linux desktop where you change a font size in one spot and every program running has its font change to the proper size. Your terminal window (w/ native desktop toolkit), your IM program (different toolkit), browser #1 with your many open tabs (all of them currently displaying websites setting their own font types and sizes), browser #2 (a glorified runtime environment for "universal" apps), your email client (running an older version of your native desktop …

@… thanks, I like the video, however:

Still enjoying Linux desktop but some edges are rough. Today's goal: play the new Boards of Canada album from the download I just bought.
The good thing about Linux is there's almost always some workaround, there must be 100 ways to play music in this environment. It's just comical than this simple task is so complicated.

Linux taketh away and Linux giveth
Something went wrong in Chrome when I tried a different desktop environment, and then my main Chrome environment lost all my login cookies. Not fatal but very annoying.
I was able to restore by using the built-in filesystem snapshots to copy my Chrome profile from yesterday.
Thanks, btrfs!
