Yesterday I found myself on France24, discussing AI policy for 40 mins.
You just never know where your day is going to end up.
Anyway, it was actually a really good discussion as all the panelists tried to push past questions of money and shares to consider society and its values.

Ok, so I just found out that today's 'Ministry of Ed-mandated' teacher-only day at our boys' high school is so that teachers could have 'professional development' in "'AI' skills" (whatever that means), provided by someone from the Google corporation. This is totally corrupt bullshit. Nothing to do with education.

Hello there! Sorry I’ve been dumping annoying news things the last while here instead of chit chatting.
I really like it here and enjoy it, perhaps, most of any online text box.
But, regrettably, circumstances have conspired to require me to make a living. This takes up an inordinate amount of time. So, the best I have been able to manage is to drop newsy bits or Gist links.
I hope, like all of my vintage, that next month will quieten down a bit.

Ed Zitron offers 15K words on whether Nvidia is like Enron (or several other famous fraudsters) or not. It's amusing and erudite and most people just won't have time to plow through it. Which is a pity, because 80% of the way through there’s a section called:
“Is NVIDIA Shipping Millions Of GPUs And Putting Them In Warehouses? Where Are The 6 Million Shipped Blackwell GPUs?”
His findings are absolutely shocking. Tl;dr: That headline just above.
The Govt have announced they plan to pass the Facial Recognition Technology Bill through the Dšil on the last sitting day before Christmas. They’ve also removed most of the safeguards the legislation had at earlier stages and widened the scope of use.

Pros: reaches loads of people, gets algorithmically stuffed into Facebook and Instagram too.
Cons: nearly 2k words. Is this the Threads audience?

Every once in a while I'm reminded I should explore my own Twin Cities more. Last week I ended up at a cute watch repair place and finally tried Ed's Lebanese Deli (it's inside a Super USA gas station). I know, I know. Just trust me. He gave us samples of the beef, the chicken and garlic, and the falafel. I had the Manakish. All of it was wonderful. 2424 Larpenteur Ave W Lauderdale, MN 55113

“Additionally, Cursor’s Amazon Web Services bills more than doubled from $6.2 million in May 2025 to $12.6 million in June 2025, exacerbating a cash crunch that began when Anthropic introduced Priority Service Tiers, an aggressive rent-seeking measure that begun what I call the Subprime AI Crisis, where model providers begin jacking up the prices on their previously subsidized rates.”

Writing software is hard, of course, and writing it for a diverse and demanding customer base is harder. The idea that CUNY-built software (much of it apparently vaporware for now) can serve the needs of a whole armada of educational stakeholders at once — well, that’s a hell of an uphill climb.
Then again…do current commercial ed tech offerings really serve needs all that well?
And as the article points out, the privacy and sovereignty benefits are •substantial•.
So: uphill climb, yes, and I for one am in favor of it.

Sometimes you have to do what you can with what you have.
Over the weekend, I tried to understand TikTok. And the only way to try to understand something is to try to do it.
So I made a short piece about something I thought ought to have got more urgent attention during the Presidential campaign- the deepfake video that surfaced.
Lord of the Rings extended Edition is astonishing.
Head of the Nazgûl misunderstanding how prophesy worked before being impaled on the spike of a giant sundial always takes me aback.
New Gist: No Contest
"There are, perhaps, alternative worlds where lots of things are different. Fianna Fšil maybe decide to run an MEP instead of a MIA. Or one where a fleet of no-hopers got nominated and we spent the whole campaign having to listen to the media asking candidates their opinions on the Latin mass and if cocaine bloat is a positive feature in a President. "
Also, I explain exactly what kind of idiot I have recently been.
I posted this video about how nice Books Upstairs is and I am sorry to say that I have received *Domestic Mockery* for my voiceover.
