Popular Front recently did a piece on the current conflicts in Ethiopia:
popularfront.substack.com/p/ev
It's a good primer for anyone who's unfamiliar, but is definitely lacking if you know any Ethiopian folks or pay attention to much news out of the Horn of Africa.
The interplay between authoritarian liberal nationalism, as represented by Abiy Ahmed and his government, and tribal federalism , represented by various tribal factions, reads to me very similarly to the liberalization of Europe (enclosure of the commons, a push to sacrifice ethnic identities for nationalist ones, etc). Like the liberalization of, say, France, it's a lot more complicated than "old thing bad, new thing good."
Liberalism was violent and authoritarian. It often sacrificed leftists. Liberalism's focus on borders and national identity led directly to pogroms and Nazism. Similarly, liberalization of Ethiopia has led to genocide and ethnic cleansing.
People think of "the terror" in France as a leftist thing, but it wasn't. It was a Liberal thing, centrist extremism, carried out against right and left.
I understand that tribal federalism is also not a good system, but I don't have a ton of depth so I'm not going to try to explain it. During the European Liberal revolutionary period of 1848, ethnic minorities would often side with some monarch or emperor against liberalism out of fear of liberal nationalism. It makes sense to support a system that's bad if your other option is a nationalism that erases your identity.
But even in Europe at that time, anarchism offered an alternative but that alternative often also drew from simply a different branch of liberalism that also suppressed culture and identity. Today the world is different. Democratic Confederalism offers a solution to *exactly* this problem, tested for more than a decade in Syria and developing now in Myanmar.
But the cross pollination between Syria and Myanmar in terms of fighters really made the ideological cross pollination possible. I don't think anything like that is happening now in Ethiopia.
Eurocentrism makes it easy to ignore what's happening now, but Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Union Commission. Ethiopia is a major military power in the region, so these developments carry a lot of weight. Especially as the US collapses and the world becomes more multipolar, the development of regional powers like Ethiopia will have a big impact on how that part of the continent develops.
If any folks are more familiar with Ethiopia than I am (which shouldn't be hard since I'm basically not), please correct me or add context if anything is missing or wrong.

Is anyone aware of a rack mountable enclosure backplane that connects to a PCIe host by cables, and has its own power supply and cooling fans etc?
Use case: server mainboard with a bunch of bifurcation capable x16 slots that I want to hook a ton of x4 devices to

I'm oddly sensitive to fan noise. A normal person's "quiet" PC to me is still unacceptably annoying. So I (foolishly) built an acoustic enclosure for my already-Noctua-laden PC.
Lots of faff for shaving off ~5dB(A).

To celebrate the centenary of the death of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, here is a photo of a model of Gaudí’s magnum opus, the Sagrada Família, which I took back in June 2017 just outside the doors of the basilica’s Passion façade.
At that time, only eight spires had been completed; since then 14 are done with the latest being Jesus’s tower back in February.
#SagradaFamilia

Scale model of the complete Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona looking towards its apse and inside a glass enclosure with reflections of tourists visible. The basilica is depicted with several tall curved pointed spires with a large cross on top of the tallest tower, a twelve-pointed star on top of the second-tallest tower, and winged subjects on the next tallest four.

Okay, I have never in all my years seen a piece of consumer hardware that advertised #Linux support on the front of the box. Yes, I've seen it in small text on the back or side of the box, or in the instruction manual, or somewhere else out of the way, but this is unambiguously "we support linux!". Wild.

A box on a black kitchen countertop. It says "Sabrent USB 3.2 type-c tool-free enclosure for m.2 pcie nvme ssds", and shows a picture of a black long rectangular metal thing with a usb-c slot on one end (roughly the size of a m.2 2280 nvme stick).

Under the pic, it has a bunch of boxes with text inside; m.2 ssd, "windows macOS compatible" in another, "Linux OS compatible", and finally "usb type-c".

When I was little I decided that Pizza Hut was actually Pizza *Hunt*.
Instead of ordering food like a normal restaurant when it was your turn you'd go out in the back where there would be a bunch of live pizzas rolling around an enclosure on their crusts like tires. The waiter would hand you a bow and arrow, you'd pick the pizza you wanted to eat, shoot it, then they'd cook it up for you.

My fruit enclosure. On the left side along the back is a raised bed with strawberries, plus aerial baskets with even more varieties. Four blueberry bushes are on the back right but still too small to really provide much this year. In the front are blackberries, raspberries (normal and black), tayberries, and boysenberries that I put in last year (and also a bit small). In the corners are grapes that are being trellised to grow along the back in a single vine. Spanning the width (27 feet) are several galvanized wires onto which the berries and grapes will be attached when they get bigger. #berries #strawberries #garden #gardening #fruit
