Today I learned the English word "access" has been a noun for centuries, but seems to have only become commonly used as a verb in the mid-20th century with the advent of computers.

"Access" as a verb meaning to gain entry is widely accepted despite its short life (the Oxford English Dictionary’s earliest reference is 1953). Some still consider it jargony, but the alternatives can be clumsy. #words #usage #OED
