The pizzelle maker died after only 10 pizzelle. No idea what happened. Got two more decent ones then two spongy discards.
Grabbed the vafler maker to try to salvage the rest of the batch. Dry chocolate Norwegian waffles were my expectation.
I got oddly puffy pizzelle hearts (roughly four pizzelle to a waffle). Frankly, an experiment I’ve always wanted to try (but I still want my pizzelle maker back).

A seven inch Norwegian waffle press with four lumps of chocolate dough in the middle, waiting to be pressed.
The waffle maker open to show the resultant waffle which is essentially a circle made of five heart shaped wedges connected at their points, a pressed diamond pattern in all of them.
Two cooling racks, one with a dozen chocolate four inch pizzelle and one with a dozen sloppy fat heart-shaped crispy waffle bits. Off to the side is a discard pile of tan spongy pizzelle bits.

There is a ton of software that is *almost* the same as some other piece of software.
It might use the same syntax/API but entirely different under the hood code, or maybe it's the same code but distributed with a different set of tools.
While this seems great, the not-exactly-identical experience causes an expectation problem.
"Great, I don't have to learn" is almost always followed by "This sucks because it's not 100% the same"
Sorry…

Search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark pair in 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
ATLAS Collaboration
arxiv.org/abs/2404.18986 arxiv.org/pdf/2404.18986
arXiv:2404.18986v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: A search for heavy pseudo-scalar ($A$) and scalar ($H$) Higgs bosons decaying into a top-quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) has been performed with 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Interference effects between the signal process and Standard Model (SM) $t\bar{t}$ production are taken into account. Final states with exactly one or exactly two electrons or muons are considered. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of a two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) of type II in the alignment limit with mass-degenerate pseudo-scalar and scalar Higgs bosons ($m_A = m_H$) and the hMSSM parameterisation of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. Ratios of the two vacuum expectation values, $\tan\beta$, smaller than 3.49 (3.16) are excluded at 95% confidence level for $m_A = m_H = 400$ GeV in the 2HDM (hMSSM). Masses up to 1240 GeV are excluded for the lowest tested $\tan\beta$ value of 0.4 in the 2HDM. In the hMSSM, masses up to 950 GeV are excluded for $\tan\beta=1.0$. In addition, generic exclusion limits are derived separately for single scalar and pseudo-scalar states for different choices of their mass and total width.

I even waited for a while to get more messages on the expectation that that would reset my counter. Nope.

I keep meeting students who feel they *must* test their variables for normality before analysis.
I tell them there's no need, & if the test tells them it's normal it's only because N is too small.
I decided to run some simulations to check, though, whether e.g., t-tests degraded more for non-normal data & small Ns.
I was a bit surprised by the result: CI coverage degrades for normal vars just as badly as other symmetric dists, but skewed distributions…

Comparison of 95% confidence interval coverage for normal, uniform, logistic, lognormal and Bernouilli distributed variables, for group sizes from 2 to 4096 (two groups of that size, equal population means). Normal does poorly from 2x16 down, other distributions are similar, except lognormal: does a good deal better, counter to expectation. Bernoulli is chaotic.
