The golf courses just north of Donnmouth can be, if well managed, very rich habitats. When the greenkeepers use herbicides or insecticides, we see dead caterpillars and tadpoles, and we often see the telltale foam of fertilisers in the streams that run off across the beach. At other times, though, the range of life is wonderful - frogs, bats, mayflies, fungi, and of course birds.
Just now there is a particular lark that we meet on the return from our morning walk who is not at all shy.…
