More and more chatter showing up in my various spheres about the planned day of protest / shutdown / general strike this Friday in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
I remain skeptical of just how effective a general strike can be here in the US — folks just aren’t used to the idea, aren’t primed for it — but this one •might• actually jostle the needles on some of the local economic seismographs.
I hope so.

„One tactic of fascism is to shift the scales of political alignment: centrists become stalwarts of the radical left; moms become ‚domestic terrorists.‘ Everyone with a whistle becomes antifa. And actually, that last part is correct—or at least it should be. A general strike has been called for Friday, January 23. With luck, thousands of Minnesotans will join in on what many further left are already doing: stopping business as usual and withdrawing their consent from fascism. Among many thin…

Economic pressure has always been the most powerful weapon in our arsenal. There's already a general strike being organized for this Friday.

This has moved quickly, and it can keep moving quickly. The more people organizing, the faster the regime will back down and (I think quickly) collapse.

More and more people calling for a US General Strike (no work, no school, no shopping) on Friday, January 23rd.
Might want to put it in your calendar.

In an interview with MS NOW’s Alex Witt over the weekend,
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland)
indicated that a nationwide
general strike might be the next thing needed in order to oppose
Donald Trump’s authoritarianism.
Raskin made clear to viewers of the program that he didn’t believe a general strike, on its own, could bring about huge changes,
but rather that it had to be done in conjunction with other actions.
“We’re not going to have one magic soluti…

What a bunch of losers.
Toxic performative masculinity at its worst. They probably can't get laid even if willing to pay for it.
Women of the US - it's time for you to declare a GENERAL STRIKE. You're more than half the population - show some backbone and go on strike.

Ugly bastards wearing combat gear in an urban civilian environment.

I consider the Jan 23 general strike in Minnesota to be fairly successful. It didn’t happen overnight, and it didn’t just happen because people posted about it a lot. There was a •lot• of consensus-building via social networks new and old. Unions got on board, lead the charge. Local businesses goaded each other into participating until •not• participating became a sort of black eye.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any announcement of today's local general strike. So I searched.
It's on Instagram, and I left ALL Meta services at the time of the Cambridge Analytical scandal.
Why are so many good youth activists still supporting Zuckerberg's empire? Supporting a business that cozies up to the tangerine tyrant?
Surely they can do better.

Oh hey, maybe Minneapolis has a high enough organization to actually pull off a local general strike that makes an impact. We'll see.

Content warning: ICE, racism, police brutality

Also: we're seeing what happens when white people are actually motivated en-masse (and the George Floyd response was actually another decent example of this).
General strike -> capitalist class goes "oh shit we need to deescalate" -> temporary reprieve.
White people actually putting their bodies on the line (or at least near enough to it that ICE killed them) got results. This is direct evidence of just how much oppression depends on the social fragmentation it invests immense energy into creating in order to not get its ass kicked both ideologically and literally.
Also for those white people like me who are scared to participate: I don't have the numbers, but there were something like 50,000 people who stood up (even if we just want to count observers and joiners-of-whistle-crowds I'd guess at least 5,000-10,000). Two in that category died (more like 30 have died in the direct-targets-of-ICE category). So don't look at Pretti and think "protesting is so risky." Consider that both the odds of being the one or two killed are low, and that if you don't stand up quickly and strongly enough against this shit, the body count will grow much higher.
This isn't over, and continued escalation and resistance is super critical now. Rather than hoping the twin cities story is a story of heroes elsewhere who solved the problem, make it a story of an inspiring example that gets replicated in LA, Chicago, and all around the nation where ICE is trying to metastasize into an unaccountable secret police.

The only way out of this mess is to exit this system. Economic pressure can lead to small adjustments. That can absolutely help. It can make things marginally better. Economic strikes have, thus far, proved to be some of the most effective in US history.
A general strike is the ultimate blow, but organizing something like that is hard. Don't wait for it. Do something now. And there are a *lot* of options between here and there.

What’s everybody’s read on the attempt at a second general strike this Friday?
From where I sit, it feels much more like a social media action than the on the 23rd; I don’t see the unions or same kind of organizing infrastructure behind it.
On the other hand, apparently it •is• getting a lot of social media traction in some circles? “All I see posts about,” said one student.
What’s the read from where you sit? Does this one have legs? Or is it a day to keep our powder dry?

And there needs to be an investigation and accountability into what happened,”

Minnesota’s coalition is demanding:
1: ICE must leave Minnesota now.
2: Renee Good’s killer, Jonathan Ross, must be held legally accountable.
3: No additional federal funding for ICE in the upcoming budget.
“These are moral common sense for a state that values truth, freedom, and life.”
