East African Rift study uncovers why breaking up is hard for some continents
Tulane University researchers, collaborating with an international team of scientists, have discovered why some parts of Earth's crust remain strong while others give way, overturning long-held assumptions about how continents break apart.

It was the third strongest earthquake ever recorded,
after Chile 1960 and
Alaska 1964.
The hypocentre was located at about 30 km depth, on the Great Sumatran Fault
- a system of faults associated with the subduction of the Indian Plate under the Sunda Plate

Just a few years after we were married my wife and I rented the upper half of a duplex near High Park. The East-West road we lived on was considerably higher than the one south of us and we could see Lake Ontario through gaps in the houses across the street. I learned this week that a few years ago I could have had beachfront access out my front door.
Glacial Lake Iroquois was a prehistoric proglacial lake that existed at the end of the last ice age approximately 13,000 years ago. It was essentially an enlargement of the present Lake Ontario that formed because the St. Lawrence River downstream from the lake was blocked by the ice sheet near the present Thousand Islands. The level of the lake was approximately 30 m above the present level of Lake Ontario. Being born 13,000 years too late probably saved me from paying a lakefront premium on my rent.

An evening discussing falling enrollment in #STEM courses at universities across Europe, especially traditional studies like chemistry, geology and meteorology. I wonder if young people are unaware of just how interesting #STEM careers to be? Or do they have the perception it's "too hard" compared to other subjects where easier grades may be had? Or is it simply they think they can have "better"* jobs in other fields?
