I've been on a Zen retreat this week, north of Asheville, NC. I took this picture today of a moth on a window. An images search informs me it's a Tulip-Tree Beauty moth, and it's a member of the "geometer" family of moths. It hadn't occurred to me that "geometry" literally means "to measure the earth." That family of moths are so named because their caterpillars are inch-worms.

Abstract: Minimal submanifolds constitute a central area within the realm of differential geometry, due to their many applications in various branches of physics. In this thesis we will employ a recent result of S. Gudmundsson and T.J. Munn to construct minimal submanifolds of the classical compact Riemannian symmetric spaces using eigenfunctions.
