Ok, Gnome removed the X11 backend and only supports Wayland. I'd be fine with that when they finally had separated the window manager from the full session. It's just annoying¹ to get logged out because the window manager crashes again – and that happens way to often!

A kind soul on mindly.social pointed me to the Linux Foundation's free Intro to Linux course. I'm slogging through it, learning bits. I'm in the fifth module, and have just learned a bit that I can use I loaded gnome-tweaks, and it may have allowed me to ease a nuisance. I'm patient enough to work my way through this intro, and hopeful.
