A good blog post about the Framework/Omarchy/DHH situation. It’s just sad. And support for far-right people in Open Source projects should just not be a thing.

Day 18: Mark Oshiro
Having just learned that Oshiro is nonbinary, they're an instant include on this list. In veering extremely heavily towards YA, and losing a spot that would have gone to an absolutely legendary mangaka, anime writer, or feminist philosopher, but "Anger is A Gift" and "Each of us a Desert" are just that good, and I'm trying to steer a bit towards towards lesser-known authors I respect.
I already mentioned "Anger is a Gift" above, but to recap, it's a painful, vivid, and beautifully honest story of queer love, loss, and protest against an oppressive system. CW for racist police murder, intergenerational trauma, and police brutality against highschool students. It's a book a lot of Americans could benefit from reading right now, and while it's fiction, it's not fantasy or sci-fi. Besides the themes and politics, the writing is just really solid, with delicate characterization and tight-plotted developments that are beautifully paced.
To me "Each of us a Desert" is maybe even more beautiful, and Oshiro leaps into a magnificent fantasy world that's richly original in its desolation, dark history, lonely characters, and mythical magic. Particularly the clearly-not-just-superscription but ambiguously-important/powerful magical elements of Oshiro's worldbuilding are a rare contrast to the usual magic-is-real-here's-how-it-works fare, and pulling that off a all as they do is a testament to their craft. The prose is wonderful, probably especially so if you speak Spanish, but I enjoyed it immensely despite only knowing a few words here and there. The rich interiority of the characters, their conflicts both with each other and within themselves, and the juxtaposition of all that against origins in cult-like ignorance allows for the delivery of a lot of wisdom and complex truths.
Between these two books, so different and yet each so powerful, Oshiro has demonstrated incredible craft and also a wide range of styles, so I'm definitely excited to read more of their work and to recommend them to others.
I'm also glad to have finally put a nonbinary author on this list; the others I had in mind won't make it at this point because there's too much genre overlap, although I'll include them in my didn't-make-it list at the end. I've now got just 2 slots left and have counted up 14 more authors that absolutely need to be mentioned, so we'll see what happens.

Good save on Szoboszlai by Donnarumma. It would have been disallowed had it gone in for reasons to be determined later. 🧂

People of his ilk whine: “Politics! Cancel culture! Name-calling! Everyone used to just praise me! Why can’t we just build good tech???”
Well, there’s the thing: his presence is a •liability• to the tech I depend on. His words and behavior threaten to fragment and destroy the human systems that keep the tech solid. I do care that he’s a racist asshole and want him gone from my circles for that reason alone, but even if I didn’t care, I’d •also• want him gone for the good of the technology.
So much painting gone on here that we're out of paint. Apparently the paint is usually watery and is eaten up by the wood like a hungry teen eats cheese.
More paint should hopefully be arriving over the weekend or on Monday.
Looking good. Would have definitely tried to pick a lighter colour for the walls if I'd known what the wood would end up like though.
More to be done on Monday before the master carpenter gets back on Tuesday.

Thinking about #DiscoElysium succesors(?), including ones with heavy ethical concerns. A lot of them have gone for female protagonists: Good! There could have been a couple more leading women in DE. But the reveal trailers are mainly voiced by men... men berating or mocking the central character.
Longdue's Hopetown has a father figure voice over, berating the protagonist: "Who do you think you are? [...] You don't understand the forces at play" Infantalised, she doesn't get to respond.
ZA/UM's Zero Parades VO is also a man, initially flattering the spy protagonist "brilliant, relentless" ... then saying she came after him and "everything she touched, written into failure". Again, no chance for the female spy to tell her side of the story ... And there's an objectifying/threatening section about how her fair hair is like a dandelion. Tangeant: what's with the heavy/bad pseudo-German VO accent?
Do I bother mentioning DarkMath's XXX Nightshift? Yes, for once a woman's VO, but (as you'll have guessed from the name) a porn-like, male-gaze view of what a woman would say and think.
So, don't be fooled that a female protagonist means we're actually getting a woman's POV. It's just a cosmetic change. Dora Klindžić's https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:rx3zlqzbjylvtyg6siikaouq experiences as a writer at ZA/UM show how women struggle to have a voice and stay employed in these types of studios. Many of the senior men she mentions are still at ZA/UM.
If you can get past the fact that this was for some reason put out as ten 14 minute segments with ads for other BBC shows at start and end, this was really good. And they're all out now so you don't have to wait a week for the next ~12 minutes of content.

It is amazing how much clutter accumulates over the decades. This year my wife and I have been going through our 'treasures'. We have gone 'if not used or worn in 18 months, donate'. Three large boxes yesterday and at least to more going out for donation today.
Next up, I will be going through our home offices for items we have not used for at least 18 months. There is a perfectly good laser I have not used in years as the inkjet is just good enough. Same goes fo…

Good Morning #Canada
The Dirt on Canadian Farming now enters Day #6, and we'll hang around the east coast today.
Nova Scotia is one of the most challenging regions for agriculture as it is limited by ocean, a rocky landscape, cool and wet climate, and acidic soil. Some of those conditions are ideal for blueberries and apples, and those farms have increased recently with the rise in fresh fruit prices. Grape growing and wine production is another sector increasing and difficult to keep bottled up. Wineries are French hybrid stock suitable for the local conditions. The rest of Nova Scotia's agriculture is made up of dairy, pigs, and maple syrup. Mink production, once a sizeable portion of the province's exports, has decreased significantly since fur coats have thankfully gone out of fashion.

I'm pretty sure I had used this starting word before, but I just really felt it would be a good word today. I was right. I thought of 2 options for the 2nd word, and went w/ the one that felt more NYTimesy.
Interestingly, the bot would have gone w/ the other one.
As you might have imagined, last night during the #WorldSeries was a good night for #DoorDashing
There were few lulls.
4:23PM - 10:09PM
18 DD = $120.50
5 UE = $49.73
But it was also a weird night because two things happened that have never before:
1) I had to return a whole UE order because it contained alcohol, the customer had no valid ID, and the Uber app refused to complete it any other way. So be forewarned! (I was shocked that I still got full pay!?)
2) I came *this* close to running out of charge in the EV! It is only the second time since owning the car that it has gone under 5%! The little 🐢 icon came on and everything! It is not usually a problem but with commuting to work 170km (starting with 80% charge) cooler weather, rain, using the defog constantly for 5.5 hours while dashing and an extra long night (I usually only go to 9PM) I pushed it a little too far! 😂 I did 30kph for the last 3km from the last delivery to home base. 😂 🪫 I should have realized the night before and charged to 90 or 100%.
