An offshoot of that is a weekly happy hour at a local dive bar, about 10-15 people a week. The bartender is friendly to us. It got started about 10 years ago through the force of will of one person, Drew, who just showed up every week and invited everyone he could think to come. It's slowly grown and has become an important part of my community.
Both of these groups skew older, 50 . I do not know what "the young people" do. They are here! They're not terribly organized, although the younger contingent is putting on our very first pride parade this month.
The overall theme here I'm pointing to is perseverance. I know most of the community organizers here and they are just persistent. Showing up every week, or every month, and slowly building community. I am very grateful to them.

I'm reading an Evelyn Anthony book, The Defector, and I'm gripped. This specific copy used to be on the bookshelf along with many others by her in the room I stayed at in my grandparents's house, and I used to think, aged eight or so, that they looked the most boring books on earth. Now decades later I'm really enjoying them. I think this change in perspective and growing appreciation of things is one the aspects of getting older that I really treasure.
