‘Voor iedereen met oren en ogen kan er weinig twijfel over bestaan dat de Israëlische overheid genocide pleegt in Gaza’, schrijft Borrell nu. De EU heeft volgens de oud-buitenlandchef een juridische verplichting om de handelsbetrekking met Israël per direct stop te zetten. Deze verplichting komt onder meer doordat Israël met het geweld in de Gazastrook een mensenrechtenverdrag met de EU schendt. Dat constateerde de EU al in juni, zonder dat dit tot een concreet ingrijpen leidde.
De stappen die de EU kan zetten, met name handelsbeperkingen, zouden in de ogen van Borrell ‘significante invloed’ kunnen uitoefenen op de Israëlische overheid. De EU is de grootste handelspartner van Israël, schrijft Borrell, en levert bovendien wapens aan het land. ‘In de toekomst zullen de leiders van de EU en de lidstaten waarschijnlijk verantwoordelijk worden gehouden voor hun medeplichtigheid aan de misdaden tegen de menselijkheid van de regering van [de Israëlische premier] Benjamin Neta…
Terese Ribera, de Spaanse nummer twee van de Europese Commissie en landgenoot van Borrell, uitte gisteren ook al kritiek op voorzitter Ursula von der Leyen.
