Donald Trump’s Greenland Obsession Is Growing More Dangerous jacobin.com/2026/01/trump-gree

Both imploding nuclear superpowers from the Cold War
have become a threat to humanity’s attempts to establish global peace and security.
From Ukraine to Gaza, from Venezuela to Greenland, events are moving very quickly, and this will not likely let up in 2026.
We need difficult, pivotal changes if we are to meet the threats to our sovereignty.

…it’s a mistake to •stop• the analysis there. This is not the same old US imperialism as ever. The false wisdom of “They’re all the same” is as always a giant intellectual trap for the left. This is not Iraq again. This is not Chile again. This is not a rerun.
The salty anger of @… is appropriate here; see posts below.
US imperialism was and is a terrible thing with a long history. Also, we are now in uncharted waters. Both these things are true.

Now #TheAmericanFascist has appointed an 'envoy' to help convince Greenlanders to ditch Denmark and join the USA. Denmark is shocked and angered, as they should be. Greenlanders are wholly opposed.
There is poetic irony of a Louisiana politician being tapped to lead a "Greenland Purchase" by America. I very much doubt the result will be the same. But there are some interesting parallels.
Lousisiana Purchase (1808)
a) Made possible by squabbles and warring in Europe.
b) involved purchase of 2.14 million km2 of North America for $380 Million in 2024 dollars. Greenland is 2.17 million km2.
It's difficult to fathom just how undervalued the Louisana Purchase was...nevermind the whole — selling Indigenous Lands without Treaty — issue. But hey... that would be another parallel with today's Inuit and Greenland Peoples.
Back in the modern context, America's Fascists just want to do Fascist things like take over sovereign countries and oppress nations, not unlike Hitler, the Kaiser's Germany, the Napoleans, Imperial Britain, Conquistador-ist Spain, and Tsarist-Stalinist-Putinist Russia.
This all needs to be kept -- forefully if need be -- in the past. We cannot allow these regressive dictators to come back.
He must be stopped.

Today's example of media and analysts actively disbelieving what's plain:
Why is the Trump regime so interested in Greenland? It doesn't make sense! There's no economic, military, or geopolitical explanation!
But what if there were? And what if it was territorial expansion for its own sake? What if it was, in a word, imperialism? Those on the radio this morning entertained all sorts of increasingly odd theories but, somehow, empire-building was a bridge too far.

If you are an anti-fascist, you are against petroleum. Petroleum funds fascism globally. It is at the heart of the military industrial complex driving global imperialism, from both the US and Russia. Motonormitivity is fascist, both in it's elitist roots and in it's ties to historical fascism (Hitler hated bikes, just on principle). Oil is militarism.
Oil is the dominant resource which drives war, both in terms of it being the primary spoil wars are fought over and in terms of fueling the military vehicles and weapons that carry out those wars. Practically every war since (and including) WWII has been over oil. Genocides are carried out to secure oil. Gaza is over oil, in more ways than one.
Oil is the absolute enemy, and AI is simply an extension of that: an attempt to atomize us so we can't resist the oil-centric global order, one last grasp at the control over our lives oil has given to those whose power is now threatened by a solar punk future.
"I haven't written for a few weeks now. As I write the closing chapter and begin rewriting previous sections, everything feels both more distant and more immediate. The working title [Kairos] has only continued to feel more and more resonant, both during the writing and during my pause."
Now is the time to resist by making something different, by creating a world fundamentally opposed to these systems of oppression.
This is the last in my Kairos series. From here on out I'll be editing to try and make it more of a book than a series of posts. Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. All editing is welcome (typos, spell checks, questions and challenges). Between ADHD and dyslexia, it's always hard for my brain to notice mistakes in my own text so I always appreciate the support of those who can.

One of the points Mr Masala made was that one of big requirements for democracies and free countries in Europe to be successful in resisting Russian and American imperialism is for societies to be resilient and cohesive. My comment there would be that we have seen a general reaction in Canada of common resolve against Trump’s comments and actions. I don’t have any doubt that if push came to shove, the Canadian population would be extremely united and resistant against any kind of attack by the USA. Likewise, I think Danish citizens are showing a similar reaction. But would Canada band together to send troops to protect and potentially die in Europe?
Maybe. But I am less sure.

MAGA is a fragile, already-teetering coalition that — even more than usual in US politics! — is run by, paid for by, and kept alive by a very, very few ultra-wealthy people. Yes, racism and fascistic thinking are rampant, but the forces that organize them into a coherent movement are forces of concentrated wealth.
I don’t think we even have to completely unravel the entirety of US political-economic imperialism to unravel this authoritarian slide. We just have to make authoritarianism in the US look unprofitable.
There’s plenty of good work for all of us there, inside and outside the US.

Critics have compared the offensive to the Iraq war, citing a familiar mix of regime-change rhetoric, security pretexts and oil interests. This month, the Trump administration labeled fentanyl – which it says flows from Venezuela – a “weapon of mass destruction”.
On Monday, Trump suggested oil seized from Venezuela could be treated as a US asset. “Maybe we will sell it, maybe we will keep it... Maybe we’ll use it in the strategic reserves. We’re keeping the ships also.”
