I think that this should indeed be public knowledge as we already pay for this with public money via the universities. The same is not true for the creative industry, including many individual artists that need to make a living off these creative works. But instead of addressing this issue of copyright (the fact that people don't have access to knowledge that is generated with their money) the blogposts are instead complaining that #AI should be exempted?

Slight tanget but...
There is exactly one way to prevent authoritarianism. That is to make these systems optional. It must be possible to leave a system if it becomes oppressive, and by doing so deprive the system of it's power.
This is what anarchists assert.
Now, have you thought to wonder why the state claiming that someone is an anarchist is generally considered sufficient to excuse any violence against that individual? If someone wants to lock you into the system, they are going to target people who assert that systems should be possible to leave.
Remember that when the only evidience against someone is "they had anarchist literature."

Content warning: re: AI Economics

The federal government’s revenue base is essentially a tax on human time. People work, firms pay them, the government takes a cut. Individual income and payroll taxes are the spine of receipts in normal years.
Indeed. Collapse in the labour economy causes a financial state collapse when the state is funded by a tax on labour.
Productivity is surging, but the gains are flowing to capital and compute, not labor.
Which would ideally mean you tax compute and capital but how's that work when compute and capital own the government already?
The output is still there. But it’s no longer routing through households on the way back to firms, which means it’s no longer routing through the IRS either.

Good Morning #Canada
The month of December will typical put a dent in your paycheck, or January if you're using your credit cards, so it's tough to save any money. Canadians rank 21st worldwide with regards to how much of our salary we put into a savings account. According to World Population Review, we put away approximately 7% of our paycheck for a #RainyDay, far behind South Korea at 35%. I'm retired and therefore not a saver at this point, but even during my most successful earnings period I can't imagine I would have been able to put away a third of my salary.
I suspect the savings percentage is driven by a small group of high wage earners as individual Canadian debt has increased. According to Equifax, total consumer debt in Canada reached $2.56 trillion at the end of 2024, a 4.6 per cent increase over 2023.

Just finished "I'm Awful, Thanks" by Lara Pickle. A good story that serves as a guide to managing emotions, although it's actually a cute story too, not just framing for the mental health discussion.
That said, I feel like it doesn't get far enough into the details of accepting self-control as our only form of real control vs. understanding that some events outside our control aren't fair or are others' attacks, and trying to manage our own emotions as our only response is a disservice to ourselves and others. Even further, I suspect that the HR resolution depicted here, while not impossible, is less frequent than much worse outcomes, which is part of a larger pattern of systemic assaults on our mental health that aren't totally solvable with individual emotional regulation.
Sure, leveling up one's control of ones own emotions and learning to accept and manage a range of emotions is super useful and it's a good thing overall, but the systemic problems of late stage capitalism are real, and making it seem like everyone is responsible for managing their own mental health in the face of these problems helps avoid confronting them.
Still, it's a good book overall, with vibrant art and a well-structured plot.

Abstract: This paper presents a deep machine learning architecture, the "polyharmonic cascade" -- a sequence of packages of polyharmonic splines, where each layer is rigorously derived from the theory of random functions and the principles of indifference. This makes it possible to approximate nonlinear functions of arbitrary complexity while preserving global smoothness and a probabilistic interpretation. For the polyharmonic cascade, a training method alternative to gradient descent is proposed: instead of directly optimizing the coefficients, one solves a single global linear system on each batch with respect to the function values at fixed "constellations" of nodes. This yields synchronized updates of all layers, preserves the probabilistic interpretation of individual layers and theoretical consistency with the original model, and scales well: all computations reduce to 2D matrix operations efficiently executed on a GPU. Fast learning without overfitting on MNIST is demonstrated.

One of the things that made organizing a lot easier with the GDC was a thing called "GDC in a box." It was a zip file with all kinds of resources. There was a directory structure, templates for all kinds of things like meetings and paperwork you had to file (for legal reasons) and "read me" files.
We had all kinds of support. There were people you could talk to who had been there. There were people you could call to walk through legal paperwork (taxes). Centralized orgs are vulnerable and easy to infiltrate. They're easy for states to shut down. But there are benefits to org structures.
I think it's possible to have the type of support we had with the GDC, but without the politics of an org (even the IWW). I hope this most recent essay has some of the same properties. I hope that it makes building something new, something no one has really imagined before, easier.
This whole project is something a bit different. It's a collective vision and collective project, from the ground up. Some of it has felt like a brain dump, just getting things that have been swimming around in my head down somewhere. But I hope this feels more like an invitation.
Everything thus far written is all useless unless people do things with it. Only from that point does it become a thing that lives, a thing with its own consciousness that can't be controlled by any individual human.
Tech billionaire cultists want to bring a new era of humanity with AGI. That is definitely not possible with LLMs, and may not be possible at all. But there is a super intelligence that is possible, though it's been constrained by capitalism: collective human intelligence.
The grand vision of the tech dystopians is that of the ultimate slave that can then enslave all humans on their behalf. I think we can build a humanity that can liberate itself from their grasp, crush their vision, and build for itself a world in which people will never be enslaved again. Not only do I think it's possible, I think it's necessary. I think there are only two choices: collective liberation or death.
And that's what I plan to write about next time to wrap this whole project up. Today things often feel impossible. But people talked about the Middle Ages as though they were the end of the world, and then everything changed in unimaginable ways. Everything can, and will, change again.
"The profit motive often is in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

Claude Sonnet 3.7 describes the image as: "The image shows a person with curly light brown hair in what appears to be a scene from a period production. They're wearing a dark jacket with a light-colored collar or scarf visible underneath. The individual has a somewhat concerned or earnest expression and is captured in what looks like an indoor setting with a blurred background.

The scene has the visual quality of a television production from several decades ago, likely from the 1970s or 1980s …

I'm writing a first rough pass of a new story just now, and I'm writing quickly to catch the bones of it. I know that, in this draft, all my characters speak much the same; I'm not worrying about this, I'll rewrite later to give them individual idioms, ways of speaking, gestures, senses of humour.
Do you do this in your first pass, or do your characters come to you already with their own idiosyncratic patterns of speech?

Content warning: Loneliness diagram

The Venn Diagram of Perceived Loneliness...
Just came across this again in my archives — it so brutally & succinctly expresses the feeling our cultures & social connections seem to have turned into... Even though we should know that it isn't like that at all, two decades of exploitative commercialized social media (not the only reason; pandemic, tech, politics being others...) have conditioned & segmented people to believe it, experience it to varying degrees, and then …

A complex Venn diagram of 8 overlapping sets (here representing interests, only labeled 1-8), with almost all individual overlaps labeled with "Others". Only the central overlap and the edge areas without overlap are labeled "Me", expressing the idea that there're no commonalities with others...

“In two weeks” finally arrived.
That’s the usual time period in which Trump has, for the last 10 years, promised the arrival of a spectacular plan to reform the healthcare system,
one that would solve every problem anyone could identify,
individual or systemic.
Just you wait, he’d say — the plan is coming in two weeks, and you’re gonna love it.
Well now the White House has indeed released what it calls
“The Great Healthcare Plan.”
Is it great? No…
