Installing Whoogle on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W in 2025
I had to update the instructions for my 2024 article. Here it is:

Installing LaTeX on Fedora takes either :
- 384 MB
- 1 GB
- 3 GB depending on the amount you choose from https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/neurofedora/latex/
This is on version 42 of the distribution
Wow installing :debian: #Debian is... slow... And terribly annoying all these unnecessary questions. Maybe I used the wrong installer, but man...
And no sudo configured for the user. visudo not available as root. Only the installer cdrom set up as apt mirror, can't install anything.
Okay I'm outta here wtf 😂
First real test of the new cluster: encoding AV1 video. I created three Sisyphus encoding workers and decided to run some Blurays across all the servers. Wrote some Ansible to build the encoding workers because it's a pain in the ass, but right now I'm working through the first 3 videos in a queue of 12. Also, these are so much more efficient...

Google plans to shut down Android's Instant Apps, which let users launch apps without installing them, later this year citing low usage and engagement (Dominic Preston/The Verge)

Attention Fedora users: ngscopeclient is now building Fedora packages in GitHub Actions CI (most recent build as of this post at https://github.com/ngscopeclient/scopehal-apps/actions/runs/16252224927).
Can anyone try installing these and verify …
As web developer I am interested in learning more about Spritely Goblins but I think I need a better starter guide then this.
Would love to spin it up on DigitalOcean or Github codespace and play with some code and see if I could build something.

Switzerland 🇨🇭 to ease #EV charging in apartment buildings: The Ständerat has voted in favour of the 'Unverbietbarkeit' of installing home EV charging points, which means that owner's associations cannot prohibit them.
The same applies to rental properties. This is a major step that will help more Swiss to switch.
The Bundesrat must now amend law(s) and regulations.
Wrote a blog post on installing Linux native on a MacBook. So I could remember what I did 🙂
#Apple
More seriously, of the devices I brought with me to Cupertino this week, the chances of installing a new operating system on each today are:
- MacBook: 95%. (I can install to a separate partition and test with a separate account without risking my main setup.)
- Apple Vision Pro: 99%. (I use this nearly every day, but don't rely on it.)
- iPhone: 0% (If there's one device I need to work reliably this week, this is that device.)
- Apple Watch: 50%? (I brought t…
Reading through the changelog, I’m struck by how many new features we have. How is it platforms like Threads, Bluesky, and Twatter take forever to release a new feature with the huge resources they have???

If anyone is still actually playing #ARKSurvivalAscended I just got a few features added to my server management script.

A particular feature of the Google Play Store for Android apps is how when you search for an app by name they show you an ad for some other app, trying to trick you into installing that instead.

Tried installing Arch Linux on an old Thinkpad last night. It did not go well. It reminded me of installing Red Hat back in the 90s. I don't mean that in a good way.
The @… crew are doing a group order of meshtastic wireless devices.
We've selected the Wismesh Pocket v2 plus a small card sized sensor / buzzer. These connect up to 7 hops and we'll be installing 2 solar powered repeaters in Gastown & Mt Pleasant (as well as direct between any two devices)

Fun fact: #Windows 95 (and in some cases the later versions) had a very suboptimal implementation of idle state — they would run a busy loop, heating the CPU unnecessarily. Of course, you could work around this by installing a third-party program that would detect this state and use a more optimal HLT instruction instead.
So you could say that the purpose of such a program was to pretend that it's doing something, so that the system wouldn't fall into its own idle loop.

When moving or copying large files between hard disks I like to see the progress to make the wait more informative and enjoyable.
If you want to achieve the same thing the "progress" package (present in the repos of all distros) allows you to do it. After installing it add to mv or cp the variable "& progress -mp $!", for example: mv file1 /destination-directory & progress -mp $!
If you like you can add the corresponding alias: alias mv='mv -v &quo…

The tech lead next to me has been on the phone the past 3 (work) days fielding calls from the service team installing a prototype system.
Every single problem they've encountered so far is one I - a year ago - suggested a quality-of-life/design-for-serviceability/ux improvement to mitigate, minimize or deal with should it occur.

I'm taking a mental health day and I am working on installing #Watchtower on the home server while drinking a fucking lovely v60. I guess this is what the heart wants?

Having to use Mac instead of Linux for work soon, I finally found a concise article on the topic.
Most others are either about installing Linux on a Mac (interesting, but not my situation) or switching because they prefer Mac (uhh..) and want to use it as one.
I aim to create an workflow as similar to Linux as I manage, without having to juggle with VMs
I’d find it extremely useful if the iOS App Library view would have a “Recently Used” section.
I am not quite sure about how the “Recently Added” section works. I am not installing new apps continuously.
Is this such a frequent operation that it requires the most visible position?

In "holy-crap-that-was-too-difficult", reworked the Jekyll build script to work using the `ruby:alpine` container. I just want the site to build without having to go through the hoops of installing `ruby` and getting `bundle` to do what I want it to. A nice Docker Compose file gets it done nice and quickly without fuss. Also I don't have random gems installed around my system.

So here's the thing. I spend today in the River window manager, on VoidLinux. Time well spend, tweaking and molding everything to my liking. Just as I did on Slackware and Gentoo.
Then I had dinner and a beer, and watched a vid of someone installing Fedora, extensions et al. It all went smoothly and the mildly tweaked system was up and running in no time.
I felt a certain weariness with myself setting in. All that self-inflicted damage 🤣

Day 9
TL;DR: Forgejo
Installed Forgejo and configured its native runner from scratch on Debian. Started with Woodpecker, but it turned out unnecessary. Everything now works locally with Docker integration and a working CI workflow.
Edit: added a GitHub backup workflow — every push to main now syncs code and tags to a private mirror repo.
I was installing Arch in a vm and suddenly it hit me: vague memories of speed running the installation over and over because I screwed up something.
But that must have happened at least 15 or 20 years ago 😭
I've spent the day in my Slackware bubble; on this computer the latest hyprland with nwg-shell.
Of course all runs well; had some great hints and my dots were still available on my Codeberg.
Only one real challenge: installing all of the Rust stack (and that involves a ton of dependencies).
Not bcs I'm a dev, but because I want eza and have a go at wezterm 😆 !
As you know, you'll have to install those separately and by yourself on Slackware. Keeps our garden nicely walled 😜
