I couldn't resist installing #CachyOS back on my main PC, on a separate SSD, alongside Windows. AMD is a first-class experience in Linux. I just downloaded The Alters, and FSR 4 simply works with my poor RX 7800 XT - without Optiscaler or any kind of manual DLL swaps.
I was trying to install TouchDesigner on my laptop, and got a pop-up about it not being a Microsoft-verified app when I double-clicked on the executable.
When I went to change the app recommendation settings, I see that it set itself to only install apps from the Microsoft store. I immediately changed it back, but I've never seen this before. 🫠
TouchDesigner is one of the few apps keeping me on Win10, and it can't even let it install in peace...
I'm not into audiophile stuff btw, just decent quality things really.
For example, I have a pair Bose 901 speakers that are ~50 years old and they sound fantastic.
But it's not even that, if properly engineered even stuff which hasn't the primary purpose of sound reproduction can sound good.
My 15-year old Apple Thunderbolt Display, the 8-year old iPad Pro and the 5-year old Mac Book Pro all sound great.
But—
The speakers in my 2025 LG TV? They shouldn't have bothered installing them but instead put them right into a landfill.
Speakers in my Asus gaming monitor? Like someone dragging a nail on a chalkboard.
And, weirdly, the Apple HomePod mini is pretty bad at reproducing music. A 10-year old Bose SoundLink mini beats the pants of it. 🤷

Friday was an adventure in tech futility. Started with a gifted laptop, Dell Latitude, and the simple task of wiping its poor excuse for an OS and installing something sensible.
#Ubuntu wasn't it. OMG Ubuntu, what HAVE you done?! Tried first #UbuntuStudio then stock Ubuntu, 24.04, 25.04, 25.11, all the installers simply hung, no log, no journalctl, CPU chugging but nada detectable action, even hours later, just "Preparing…"
Net advice is old, of course, but points to the snap bootstrap service, fix has no effect but Kee-riced look at the mount table?! Snaps crackle and pop all over! Wtf, why? 🤯
And it is tedious. These 'DVD' iso files are 7GB, so, after 6 hours frustration, I thought, let's try something smaller to cut the turnaround time. #Debian13 simple bare-bones net-install seemed a good candidate …
And it was. Seemless install. 😊
After patching and rebuilding kwin_wayland to remove the bullshit-ass fucking hardcoded gestures that have been in there since at least 2021 with an open bug, funding spent, and no resolution in sight, and thereafter installing both fusuma and fusuma-plugin-sendkey, I have sucessfully gotten KDE on Wayland to behave normally qua gestures. I think.

I'm installing and tweaking #Immich, a really neat "Google Photos" like app that runs locally. It uses ML to do face detection and other neat features. I've been tuning my server and needed a better way to measure performance, so I vibe wrote a helper script. If you run Immich, this might be useful to you:

LLM-guided development is making #autobahn truly great. Now it decided to arbitrarily start "vendoring" flatbuffers. Except that by "vendoring", they actually mean installing their own top-level `flatbuffers` package as part of `autobahn` (and therefore overwriting the original `flatbuffers`). I wonder how #Google feels about that…

🥳 New Kitten Release
• Reduces minimum Bash version requirement for installing Kitten to Bash 3.2 (was previously Bash 5 ). This removes the requirement for people on macOS to upgrade the ancient version of Bash that Apple ships with their desktop operating system. (If you’re on Linux none of this was ever an issue for you.)¹
• Updates runtime to Node 24.12.0, the latest long-term support (LTS) version.
Something is broken in the #dotnet CLI tooling, specifically the cert tool. It can't seem to access localhost certificates, but it's happy to keep creating and installing new ones.
I can't even anymore... I'm so tired.
Note: It could also be Apple's fault with a Tahoe update. Who knows anymore? 🤷♂️

Folks who balk about Mastodon not letting you migrate your entire presence elsewhere likely have never tried to extricate their personal workflow from a 15 year old laptop! 😅
That is, of course, AFTER previously spending an hour or so to weed out the about:config AI functions and add no-AI search engines to the fresh Firefox install 😞
Yes, I have contemplated installing Emacs and nothing else. Would seem the only sensible thing to do, but 'sensible' was never listed on my report card.

Great, my bank decided that it would release a new version of their app that isn't compatible with my phone...
Reason: They require "Google Play Integrity API" to pass before installing...
For those unfamiliar with it: the Integrity API is just a type of DRM to discourage people from using custom ROMs.

Reinstalled an old laptop from the BIOS up, installing ZorinOS. The WiFi wouldn't connect. I found a Reddit comment suggesting a BIOS setting. It seemed familiar. I'd upvoted the comment 3 years ago.
We moved to our neighborhood 7 years ago. Over all that that time I watched people wander across the road in front of the subway station despite the sometimes heavy traffic. I always figured I'd go by one day and see an ambulance or worse. Tonight when I got off the train, I noticed that the city finally did something about it, installing a crosswalk with a beg button and lights.
Maybe it's a metaphor? We're (incredibly, painfully) slow, but we end up doing the right thing …

'debootstrap' is one of my favourite parts of debian - and you can use it from other distros as well! It lets you setup a debian install in a directory for use with a container/chroot/etc .
My most recent two uses are 1) Building up a new debian install on an existing machine running a different distro in an LVM LV on the running system and configoring it, ready to go on reboot 2) Installing a very old debian chroot for some testing.
It's f#ck*ng unbelievable what effort it takes to re-install a d%mbsh!t tool like SnippingTool* on Windows 11 .. especially when offline.
Seriously... installing W11 last week (it took me 2.5 days as I tooted last time) ... and configuring it to be even usable in some kind freaked and stressed me out so much... I grew grey hair in my beard.
When I shaved on sunday it was a real WTF moment.
Many months ago, I was trying to mod Borderlands 2 on Linux.
It has been made easier with Steam Deck as most mod mangers offer Linux builds.
I wish there was an all-in-one GUI software which handled mods for games. It would assist in installing mods for all kinds of games like how Minecraft’s third party launchers do.

I tried the Fedora Atomic Cosmic Desktop iso and it was very impressive. Cosmic is the most responsive UI I’ve used that isn’t called Workbench. Sadly, Steam had some issues with controllers and while it seemed solvable, it didn’t seem like a clean solution. I’m going to miss Cosmic and will definitely check it out again once it is really done because it is super cool. Now, Bazzite is installing away.

Installing ungoogled-chromium-bin on Gentoo turned out to be very straightforward. Just as adding the Librewolf repo is btw. Recently I've been moving all browser installs over to these two. Both projects have been around for a long time and consistently deliver quality.

Let it run overnight, but the end result is worth waiting for: a very clean, fully functional KDE 6 session on Slackware. Exactly the base you would get when installing Plasma on ArchLinux, and thus a perfect base to build on.
Later today: adding homebrew, distrobox and flatpak to get additional applications installed.
