The neighbor lady (51, quite smart but not technical) asked me yesterday about installing Linux. YoLD may be here.

After patching and rebuilding kwin_wayland to remove the bullshit-ass fucking hardcoded gestures that have been in there since at least 2021 with an open bug, funding spent, and no resolution in sight, and thereafter installing both fusuma and fusuma-plugin-sendkey, I have sucessfully gotten KDE on Wayland to behave normally qua gestures. I think.

Love me eza. That installing this takes more than 25 effing minutes, because the entire Rust stack is pulled in, is sloppy. Ffs. Shoving it down my hatch.
Apple Watch users - have you noticed anything useful or helpful in the new WatchOS 26.4?

Hahahahaha.

Something is broken in the #dotnet CLI tooling, specifically the cert tool. It can't seem to access localhost certificates, but it's happy to keep creating and installing new ones.
I can't even anymore... I'm so tired.
Note: It could also be Apple's fault with a Tahoe update. Who knows anymore? 🤷♂️
So, got the server in place but discovered that the Docker image that I created that has the Sisyphus client and all of the binaries like `ffmpeg`, `av1an` was not very happy. Ffmpeg crashed because it couldn't find the `libSvtAvcEnc.so.4` library which was because I had a custom version of it installed (`svt-av1-psyex`).
Got the Dockerfile fixed by installing `svt-av1-psyex` and then compiling `ffmpeg` against those libraries, then installing both `svt-av1-psyex` and `ffmpeg` int…

Great, my bank decided that it would release a new version of their app that isn't compatible with my phone...
Reason: They require "Google Play Integrity API" to pass before installing...
For those unfamiliar with it: the Integrity API is just a type of DRM to discourage people from using custom ROMs.
It is often cited to be "because of security" but when a phone that hasn't had any updates for 3 years passes it with flying colours, it's highl…
Roman elites drank from leaded cups because it made water sweeter. Radiation was thought at one time to have healing properties, so people would add uranium to their drinking water. Glowing dishes are still a collectors item. After the discovery of x-rays, shoe stores started installing them and using them on kids feet to size shoes. Lead was added to gasoline to improve engine performance, and paint to make it whiter. We all know about asbestos and DDT.
We look back at all of this and think, "how could people have been so incompetent back then?" Some of these things caused irreparable harm in their generation, some continue to cause harm today almost 100 years later.
If you wonder that, look at the whole #LLM thing and you have your answer.
Reinstalled an old laptop from the BIOS up, installing ZorinOS. The WiFi wouldn't connect. I found a Reddit comment suggesting a BIOS setting. It seemed familiar. I'd upvoted the comment 3 years ago.
Past me: taking enhanced old game ports, installing all the enhanced textures, sound packs, etc.
Modern me: playing reasonably accurate old game ports, not even wanting a good MIDI synthesizer.

@… if you like, switch up to STABLE or (more adventurously) 16.0-CURRENT. I wonder whether the same graphics will be less bugged with a more advanced version of the OS.
Did you choose pkgbase (packages) when installing the OS?

my plan was almost going perfectly: the ssd delivery got delayed by one day, the pc didn’t boot the first time after installing it, but was all solved by literally tapping randomly on some cables, fedora’s second ever message on screen was a “command not found” error, but it booted anyway, I assumed I would get KDE but I got GNOME…
and now I’m too tired to use it 😭

I'm not into audiophile stuff btw, just decent quality things really.
For example, I have a pair Bose 901 speakers that are ~50 years old and they sound fantastic.
But it's not even that, if properly engineered even stuff which hasn't the primary purpose of sound reproduction can sound good.
My 15-year old Apple Thunderbolt Display, the 8-year old iPad Pro and the 5-year old Mac Book Pro all sound great.
But—
The speakers in my 2025 LG TV? They shouldn't have bothered installing them but instead put them right into a landfill.
Speakers in my Asus gaming monitor? Like someone dragging a nail on a chalkboard.
And, weirdly, the Apple HomePod mini is pretty bad at reproducing music. A 10-year old Bose SoundLink mini beats the pants of it. 🤷
After the success of the first node replacement, I'm now also replacing the other one, with the same M920q Tiny ThinkCentre. After running load tests (read stitching some big minimaps) for a day, I did the final reimaging yesterday.
Also installing an active P1 splitter so HA can run on both these nodes. This has been a very long-term item on the list. (For science!)

Who needs 32GB of system memory anyway? 🧐
I couldn't resist installing #CachyOS back on my main PC, on a separate SSD, alongside Windows. AMD is a first-class experience in Linux. I just downloaded The Alters, and FSR 4 simply works with my poor RX 7800 XT - without Optiscaler or any kind of manual DLL swaps.

OKAY. back to windows it is. Installing KDE on ubuntu and it being super laggy and then trying to uninstall it has my my Ubuntu no longer loading a UI at all. it's just a console input.
I tried. now I probably just need to reinstall Ubuntu to get back to a baseline.

Tried installing ubuntu 24.04 server as a CI builder image and keep getting errors during the install process. Lovely.
The amount of work that some distros put into their installers release after release is always amusing to me, almost like an expected use case of #linux is that people will be installing from scratch frequently.
