The new 'Commodore 64' is quite obviously just an Ultimate 64 in a transparent case. If you don't already have one of those, and you wanted one already, it's probably worth buying the new offering just to get the mechanical keyboard. Real C64 keyboards are absolutely awful.

Are you tired of illuminated gaming keyboards, and even the clacking sound of mechanical keyboards has lost their appeal?
Fear not, there's hope:

You know, this is like if keyboard manufacturers asking if keyboards feel pain from being typed on and "serious media" picks it up as a story

After more than 5 years I've finally written a post on my old blog because this post is longer. It's about my recent success of repurposing old hardware at the office to build a PC with two graphics cards. It hosts two virtual machines and each one has access to a dedicated Nvidia GPU.
With two monitors, mice and keyboards two people could even work on site at the same machine 😎 But this is primarily meant to provide remote desktops for I/O and editorial.

Took me a while to realize this: All of our buttons and knobs being replaced by touchscreens is one (possibly subliminal) reason behind the rising obsession with mechanical keyboards.

So I think the idea is to keep dropping buttons and keys from laptop keyboards until everything is just a tablet? RIP dedicated pgup/pgdn keys.
meanwhile some hardware engineer was like, "keep that dedicated 'prt sc' key, I push that 500 times per day! never touch page down, tho.."

I have never used linear switches in a keyboard. All my mechanical keyboards have clicky switches.
I am trying to figure out between tactile and linear switches. I am not a gamer so my keyboard is used only for typing.
Should I get linear or tactile? Can you help understand the choice? Thank you

One of my most… lasting… memories from the #EuroPython sprints is when I almost threw this gentleman’s notebook against the wall. And that was AFTER he switched off his colemak crimes.

My trying to exit Vim but caps lock is on and it typed :QA! instead of :qa! making me so angry I hit \ instead of enter (which are next to each other on US keyboards).

The traditional method of removing crumbs from the keyboard is to dynamically hit its side against the table.
Do you also use it for laptop keyboards?

Slow day today, decided to spruce up the homelab and get some stuff organized. Still need to clean the rest of the room outside of the camera shot though.

A picture of the homelab. From right-to-left: the minirack hosting all of the compute, a small network rack above a backup NAS, some black shelving holding the primary NAS along with the EMC shelf and some keyboards.

I have a weakness for silly foldable bluetooth keyboards. but this one has to be one of the worst ones i’ve bought. the crazy key placement/sizing and how hard I have to press makes the geezer z1 a truly terrible experience. I regret not getting the cat version, at least it would have been kawaii

Why do most commercial keyboards have the space key so long?
I have to flex my thumb or pinky like a gymnast to reach the rest of the modifier keys. So annoying.

Some digital pianos/keyboards have a “split” feature, which lets you put an instrument on the left hand and a different instrument on the right hand.
For pianos that don’t support this but support MIDI it seems to me that it should be entirely possible to emulate this behaviour in a synthesiser, but searching online I couldn’t really find anything about this. All I found was pianos that supported splitting the keyboard into two separate MIDI channels, but that won’t work.
Is there any way of doing this, preferably on like LMMS or something? Or any software that can get a MIDI channel and split it into two channels depending on the key that is pressed on the piano?
On Linux and open source, please
