When keyboards were made for people who typed for a living, the lettering on the keys was structural, like the words in a Brighton Rock. I suppose that era has passed.

I cleaned up the old Apple keyboard (removed all keys, removed all crumbs, reassembled) and first, I’m surprised how much larger it is than the newer version…
Second, it’s so mushy. I can’t use it, it feels terrible to type on!
I’m going to try a Kisnt KN85 this week and we’ll see how that feels.

I'm looking for 12 testers using Play Store for an Android app I built with Claude AI:
Widekey Keyboard. Each key holds two characters. Tap once for the left, tap twice quickly for the right. (No autocorrect, no word prediction, no swipe typing.)
Intended for people who find standard touch keyboards on small screens imprecise.
Free, no ads, no data collection, Apache 2.0 open source.
Please send me a DM with your Android account email if you're interested.

So I tested a split keyboard last week, and there were a few things that bothered me about it (more on that later) so I figured I would look for other keyboards...
Oh shit, rabbit hole!
I didn't find any split keyboard that I liked, and besides that they are super expensive! Like, I've paid less for computers than some of those keyboards cost.
So then I thought about building one, but that gets expensive as well, and...

Why aren’t all keyboards black / orange/red / grey or shades of blue? Seems a waste of desks.

Side note: a minimal installation – base without base (pictured in my previous toot) – is not recommended.
Key mapping fails. This might be acceptable with American keyboards, but the consequences for other maps can be frustrating.

And by the way, I decided to give OpenSUSE Tumbleweed another try today. Since Debian has its little quirks with my keyboards and I don’t want to use a distribution with a U.S. background like Fedora, OpenSUSE would be the politically correct choice for me as a European solution.

A photo from the Saturday NEMS meetup (Nashville Electronic Music and Synthesizers). Great turnout, and some neat stuff people are working on. I brought my most recent revision of a portable eurorack kit, in it's 3D printed case, seen in the bottom left. Somehow I walked out with only one photo, so the others are from an electronic performance at the same venue on Thursday.

My future self talking to my past self - "There will be a moment when you have around 10 mechanical keyboards. And a deal will go live for a really sick $25 keyboard.
It's very important that you say no."

Crazy... After a week of continuous use with Debian (with daily reboots in the morning), my Logitech MX Mechanical keyboard suddenly started acting up: some letters got stuck and were displayed dozens of times while I was typing. Other keys weren't registering at all.
Well, I thought, maybe there’s something wrong with the keyboard—dirt, crumbs, dust, or something like that. So I switched keyboards to an MX Keys—exactly the same issue. No improvement even with a third keyboard (Che…
