Content warning: the knock-on effects of open sign-ups

What happens when you don't vet sign-ups is that mods on other instances who value the safety of their users have to pick up your slack.
The extensive work illustrated in the linked post (from @…) is also taking place to varying degrees on every other instance which still federates with mastodon.social and the other open-sign-up ones.
This is like house-sharing with someone who repeatedly leaves the front door unlocked.
Yes of course there are much horribler instances, but those tend to be blocked wholesale in my part of Fedi. Among the instances we do federate with, the spam & scam accounts I see are nearly always on m.s.
If mastodon.social mods (who apparently are paid!) were to make people introduce themselves before approving new accounts, then a lot of this spam wouldn't be getting in the door. Quash once at source, save multiple other people from having to repeat the same work.
I appreciate that they're trying to make it easy for newcomers to join, but at what cost? And is an intro message really beyond the typical non-techie person? I think there are some considerably higher barriers to adoption than that. Not convinced it's a good tradeoff.
I don't actually want this instance to defederate from m.s, because lots of the people I follow are on there. But I can really see why people sometimes do.

1. So much construction. It is almost impossible to go anywhere without lane closures.
2. Buses are less than reliable and the last update nuked one route I took and it leaves me one and only one route to the transfer point near work.

Sometimes you have a #dream that leaves you pondering. This time the middle segment involved freeing a certain harmless creature. It wasn't imprisoned in a physical jail but rather barred from leaving by another stronger creature. I've said that I'll keep said guardian busy for half an hour, so the victim could escape. The guardian turned out demonic in nature, and turned into an iron C-shaped bracket that tightened against my right side painfully. So my fight was mostly an attempt to get it off me, or at least stop it from tightening even more.
Since I woke up, I'm wondering if it was just an oddly specific dream, or if my right side actually ached through the night.

I'm right chuffed! Even just after watering it, and having the door open for a while, our greenhouse is between 25-40 degrees C, in the last week of winter. The leaves are ever so slowly starting to change color. Nice down-by-the-river run after work 😃 Vision was a little shaky, but I was able to do some exercises for that on the path, which is flat pavement, and that helped. Pace is slowly getting better.

Some really small and delicate blue flowers I found this monday in Monkey Run which is a natural area owned by Cornell upstream of the campus

In the lower left there is a planet with a lot of leaves for just two tiny pentagonal blue flowers with little yellow cores; to the lower right there are some irregular stones but most of the field is filled up with dried out brown leaves.
